  • The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest combines the anticipation of Christmas, the global power of the Super Bowl, and the obnoxious pageantry of the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding, as the July 4th gastronomical event in Coney Island, Brooklyn, is upon us
  • The reigning king of the male division, Joey Chestnut, is an overwhelming favorite to retain his title and continue his dynasty, but despite that likely outcome, there are lingering questions surrounding the contest to keep viewers enraptured and eager to tune in to see the event with coverage beginning at noon ET on ESPN2 and the event itself shown live at 12:30 PM ET, simulcast on ABC
  • Prediction markets are offering a litany of opportunities for users to weigh in, with one prominent market speculating on how many hot dogs and buns Chestnut will consume during the contest

It’s unlikely that Nathan Handwerker had this type of event in mind when the immigrant from Poland opened a hot dog stand using his family’s recipe for the signature product in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Nathan’s hot dog stand took off with people visiting the beach and the attractions, wanting an inexpensive snack that hearkened back to their ancestry. The idea of eating as many hot dogs as possible would have been undeniably foreign. But he certainly would have embraced it, given the cultural significance of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and its evolution to become the pinnacle of competitive eating.

While the contest has been mostly ongoing at the seminal location for more than five decades, going back to before another New York institution, the Knicks, last won the NBA title, it has only drawn widespread attention over the past three decades or so. The top-tier competitors are well-compensated for their talents and have become household names and pop culture icons with endorsements, memes, and fame.

Few are better known than Joey Chestnut.

Since every champion eventually gets knocked off their perch, some might consider whether the time is right to go against Chestnut. It’s a risk because the margins are generally too low to make it worthwhile. As for other parts of the contest, there is plenty to speculate on. One popular market is based on sheer numbers. Specifically: Will Joey Chestnut break the record for hot dogs and buns eaten, currently held by…Joey Chestnut?

The contest record (and the World Record) is 76, set in 2021. In general, he has finished in the mid-60s to the low-70s.

Prediction markets give users the chance to jump into this market with a simple Yes or No as to whether he breaks the record in the upcoming Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Odds for Joey Chestnut to Break the Hot Dog Eating Contest Record

Trading volume for this market is beyond $42,000. It will assuredly rise as the contest approaches.

This is a simple market of “will he or won’t he?” generally referring to Joey Chestnut. However, the actual market technically centers on whether the record will be broken at all.

Perhaps some eating prodigy arrives and not only inhales more hot dogs and buns than Chestnut to win the contest, but breaks his record while doing so.

Currently, the percentage is in the mid-teens for someone to break the record. Most people taking part in this market do not believe the record will be broken by Chestnut or anyone else.

For those who want to take part in this market, there is a Kalshi referral code offering a $15 Sign-Up Bonus after completing $15 in trades.

The rules say that a competitor (Chestnut or otherwise) must break the men’s 4th of July record of 76 hot dogs and buns eaten in the 2026 Nathan’s Famous 4th of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. It cannot be a tie.

Major League Eating, ESPN, Nathan’s Famous, and Fox Sports will verify the outcome.

Will Joey Chestnut or Any Competitor Break the Record for Hot Dogs and Buns Eaten?

For the 2026 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, the question of whether Joey Chestnut or any competitor will break the record of 76 hot dogs and buns being consumed is simple: Will it or will it not be broken?

On the surface, the answer is no.

Are the factors such that the record could be shattered?

It comes down to Chestnut and how he is feeling at contest time. If he’s in a zone and on top of his game like Tom Brady playing flawlessly in a Super Bowl, Michael Jordan putting up 60 points in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, or Lionel Messi scoring two or more goals in carrying Argentina to its second straight World Cup, then Chestnut could certainly surpass 76 hot dogs and buns.

But motivation is the key. Like any endeavor, complacency is often a bigger challenge than any upstart. Though the foundation for Chestnut’s rise was his stunning defeat of Takeru Kobayashi in 2007, breaking Kobayashi’s six-year run at the top, it wasn’t as though Chestnut was an unknown. He’d lost to Kobayashi by 1.75 hot dogs in 2006. Kobayashi held the pre-Chestnut record that year with 53.75. Over the last 20 years, that has increased by a staggering 22.25.

Is there a competitor who could challenge not just Chestnut, but the record? And will Chestnut be aware of this and go beyond his max to win?

The last competitor apart from Chestnut to win the contest was Patrick Bertoletti in 2024, and that was only because Chestnut could not compete due to a sponsorship dispute. Bertoletti ate 58 hot dogs and buns.

The weather is sure to be a factor as well since New York (and much of the continental U.S.) is gripped in a stifling heat wave. In super-hot weather, people generally don’t even want to eat, let alone force as much food down their throats as possible. That is true for professional eaters as well.

In short, Chestnut’s dominance is absolute and will not be stopped but for an unexpected newcomer, one who has not yet shown himself.

The only one who could conceivably break the record is Chestnut himself. And it will not be in the 2026 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
