Trailing by two goals late in the second half, Lionel Messi and Argentina pulled off a comeback for the ages on Tuesday, scoring three goals the span of 13 minutes to beat Egypt (3-2).

Now the defending champions will move on to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on July 11 in Kansas City after the latter earned a low-event penalty-shootout win over Colombia.

Based on the semifinal qualification market at prediction site Kalshi, Argentina is a -270 (73¢) favorite to advance, with Switzerland at +257 (28¢).

FanDuel was first to post a three-way moneyline, which listed Argentina at -145 to win in 90 minutes, a Switzerland victory at +440, and a full-time draw at +280. The O/U is 2.5 goals with the under favored at -142 and the over at +116.

In the latest odds to win the World Cup, Argentina is trading at 17.5¢ (equal to +471 odds), which is actually worse than before the knockout stage. An extra-time win over Cape Verde and the frantic comeback against Egypt have not inspired confidence from bettors/oddsmakers.

Argentina Barely Escapes Egypt

After a Yasser Ibrahim tally in the 15th minute and a missed penalty from Lionel Messi in 21st, Argentina found itself down 1-0 at the half to underdog Egypt. In the second half, they were playing with fire. A second Egyptian goal was wiped off due to a dubious foul in the 58th minute but Mostafa Ziko would get it back on another brilliant counterattack in the 67th.

That was evidently a wake-up call for the defending champions. Defender-turned-makeshift-center-forward Cristian Romero pulled his team within one on a header in the 79th minute.

Messi tied the game on a brilliant half-volley four minutes later.

And Enzo Fernandez finished off Argentina’s own breakneck counterattack to win it in the second minute of stoppage time.

Switzerland Grinds Out Win vs Colombia

In one of the worst games of the tournament (from an entertainment-value standpoint), Switzerland earned a 0-0 (4-3) penalty shootout victory over Colombia.

The teams combined for just 0.70 xG over 90 minutes, putting four total shots on target.

Shots were more plentiful in extra time but a combination of crossbars, stunning inaccuracy, and quality saves forced the match to penalties.

Argentina and Switzerland have met seven times previously with the Argentines winning five and two ending in draws. Only two of those were in the last 15 years and Argentina won both (1-0 at the 2014 World Cup, 3-1 in a 2012 friendly).
