World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz enters the US Open as a massive first-round favorite against No. 99 Roman Safiullin. Scheduled for August 31 at 1:40 PM ET inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, this opening-round matchup presents a steep climb for the heavy underdog.

The single-most critical question for bettors is whether Safiullin can find answers for Alcaraz’s elite baseline game over a best-of-five match. The Elo numbers reinforce that concern: Alcaraz owns a 2,073.3 hard-court Elo rating, compared with 1,736.8 for Safiullin, a gap of 336.5 points, according to the latest ratings at Tennis Abstract.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Roman Safiullin Picks & Best Bets

My thesis for this spread is straightforward: Alcaraz has the stronger serve, return, and point-by-point dominance profile. Over three sets, he’ll create ample distance.

Over the last 52 weeks, he has won 90.0% of his service games and 29.8% of return games, compared with Safiullin’s 82.8% and 23.7%, respectively. Alcaraz also wins 74.4% of first-serve points and 56.5% of second-serve points, edging Safiullin at 72.3% and 55.3%.

The efficiency gap is even more pronounced. Alcaraz’s 2.262 Dominance Ratio is well above Safiullin’s 1.259 per Tennis Ratio, while his Breakpoints Prevail mark is 2.958 to 1.356, his Dominance Efficiency is 1.308 to 1.077, and his Match Efficiency is 3.006 to 1.956. He creates 0.69 break points per game while facing only 0.30, versus Safiullin’s 0.60 created and 0.47 to defend. Alcaraz’s 66.6% first-serve accuracy also slightly exceeds Safiullin’s 65.0%, and his 0.16 double faults per game are below Safiullin’s 0.20. Those figures give Alcaraz repeated opportunities to separate on the scoreboard and make the -4.5 games attractive.

The recent hard-court results support that projection. Alcaraz went 7-0 at the 2026 Australian Open, including wins over Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur, then went 5-0 in Doha with straight-sets wins over Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils. Safiullin’s recent hard-court sample is thinner and less convincing: after wins over Stan Wawrinka and Sebastian Ofner at the Cancun Challenger, he lost to Hubert Hurkacz and then fell to Hugo Grenier in Winston-Salem. That contrast in both opponent quality and results adds context to the large Elo gap.

The head-to-head sample is split, but the most recent meeting favors Alcaraz. He beat Safiullin 6-4, 6-2 at the 2024 Olympics, while Safiullin’s earlier 2023 Paris indoor-hard victory came by a 6-3, 6-4 score. The Olympic result is more relevant to this handicap than treating the matchup as a one-sided historical trend, and Alcaraz’s current hard-court Elo advantage supplies the stronger forward-looking signal.

Under 38.5 Total Games (-122 / 55¢ at Polymarket)

Backing the under relies on Alcaraz’s ability to protect his own service games while pressuring Safiullin’s second serve. Alcaraz saves 66.9% of break points and wins 53.4% of opponents’ second-serve points on return; Safiullin’s corresponding figures are 63.6% and 50.2%. Alcaraz also converts 43.3% of break points, compared with 39.2% for Safiullin.

The pressure-point numbers reinforce the same matchup dynamic. Alcaraz wins 72.1% of pressure points on serve and 41.6% on return, compared with Safiullin’s 63.5% and 38.5%. Alcaraz’s 34.1% return rate against first serves and 53.4% rate against second serves also top Safiullin’s 31.0% and 50.2%, making breaks—and short sets—more likely to come from the favorite.

To exceed 38.5 games, Safiullin would likely need to push multiple sets deep, reach tiebreaks, or win a set. Although Safiullin has won 62.5% of his tiebreaks over the sample versus Alcaraz’s 52.9%, tiebreaks are less likely to matter if Alcaraz’s superior break-point creation and return-game profile prevent sets from reaching that stage. His stronger hard-court Elo, recent hard-court form, and substantially better efficiency metrics make a controlled straight-sets result the preferred projection, keeping the match under the total.

2023-10-31Paris MastersRound of 16Roman Safiullin6-3, 6-4 (2-0 in sets)

Carlos Alcaraz and Roman Safiullin have crossed paths twice, resulting in a 1-1 head-to-head record. Safiullin won the first meeting at the 2023 Paris Masters on indoor hard court, but Alcaraz answered with a decisive straight-sets victory at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The split record limits the predictive value of the matchup history, yet the broader numbers favor Alcaraz. His 336.5-point hard-court Elo edge, higher service and return-game win rates, and superior dominance and breakpoint metrics provide a stronger basis for projecting the US Open match than the small H2H sample alone.
