Purdue vs UCLA Prediction, Odds & Best Bet for Saturday Night CFB

Purdue heads west to face UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff is at 11 p.m. ET on BTN, with the Bruins looking to improve to 3-0 under new head coach Bob Chesney.

UCLA beat San Diego State 28-10 last week after the teams went into halftime scoreless. Purdue is 1-1 following a double-overtime loss to Wake Forest, despite another productive outing from its offense.

Purdue vs UCLA Prediction

• Prediction: UCLA 31, Purdue 17.

UCLA’s running game gives the Bruins a dependable way to finish drives. Wayne Knight carried 13 times for 97 yards against San Diego State and scored three rushing touchdowns. He has scored three rushing touchdowns in each of UCLA’s first two games.

Knight does not need every possession to produce a long run to affect this matchup. His ability to finish near the end zone has already turned scoring opportunities into touchdowns. UCLA can keep giving him chances without making its passing game responsible for every score.

Purdue has its own productive back in Devin Ijeboi. He rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns last week and added six catches for 42 yards. Through two games, he has 201 rushing yards and four rushing scores, giving the Boilermakers another option alongside Ryan Browne.

Browne has thrown for 646 yards while completing 77.5% of his passes this season. Those numbers deserve more respect than a simple assumption that Purdue will struggle because it is traveling west. The Boilermakers have been moving the ball, and UCLA needs to prevent that efficiency from becoming sustained touchdown drives.

My projected 14-point margin lands directly on the spread. That makes the total more appealing than forcing an ATS wager. I favor UCLA at home, but a straight-up prediction does not automatically justify laying two touchdowns against an offense that has started this efficiently.

A UCLA victory by exactly 14 points would push either side of this spread. The under needs the teams to combine for 53 points or fewer. My 31-17 projection leaves five points of room below that total without requiring Purdue’s offense to disappear.

Purdue vs UCLA Best Bet

• Best bet: Under 53.5 (-108).

Purdue has scored on all 13 of its red-zone trips, but five ended in field goals rather than touchdowns. That distinction matters for an under. The Boilermakers can move the ball and contribute points without every successful possession producing seven.

The counterargument is clear: Purdue has committed no turnovers and punted only three times through two games. If that continues and more red-zone trips become touchdowns, this total could be challenged. I am not assuming a sudden turnover problem to make the under work.

UCLA’s scoreless first half against San Diego State also shows why the Bruins’ final winning margin does not tell the entire scoring story. They eventually pulled away, but it took time. A similar stretch without touchdowns would leave both teams needing a much faster finish to clear 53.5.

The under is my only wager here. UCLA has enough scoring production from Knight to support the win prediction, while Purdue’s efficient passing and capable running back make a large spread less attractive. I would rather back a game in the high 40s than demand a comfortable Bruins cover.
