  • Iowa and Michigan bring unbeaten records into their Week 4 Big Ten meeting
  • The early spread and low total put both defensive fronts under the spotlight
  • Read below for my Iowa vs Michigan prediction, spread and total picks

No. 17 Iowa visits No. 18 Michigan on Saturday, September 26, with both teams off to 3-0 starts. Kickoff at Michigan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS, giving this early Big Ten matchup a national afternoon audience.

The Hawkeyes have allowed just 13 points in three games, while the Wolverines have surrendered 39. Those defensive results help explain a total below 40, although neither offense has faced this exact test yet.

My Iowa vs Michigan prediction starts with how each team can sustain drives against a stronger front. Below, I break down the early spread, total and the numbers that matter before laying out the current prices.

Iowa vs Michigan Prediction

  • Spread pick: Michigan -5.5 (-108 at BetMGM)
  • Total pick: Under 38.5 (-108 at BetMGM)

I’m backing Michigan to cover at home, with the under as my total pick. Iowa’s rushing production deserves respect, but Michigan has allowed only 2.7 yards per carry and has already recorded 10 sacks. That makes it harder for the Hawkeyes to rely on the ground game throughout the afternoon.

Iowa rolled up 422 rushing yards in its 55-0 win over Northern Iowa. That was impressive, but its 16-13 win over Iowa State is a better reminder of how much tighter possessions can become against a competitive opponent. I expect fewer easy gains in Ann Arbor.

Bryce Underwood gives Michigan a second way to create yardage when the running backs are contained. He has rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns through three games, alongside 504 passing yards. His ability to extend a third-down play is part of why I prefer the home side at less than a touchdown.

The concern is ball security. Michigan has committed five turnovers, compared with Iowa’s one, and another short field could erase the margin needed to cover. I’m taking the Wolverines at -5.5, but I would reassess this play if the spread reaches a full touchdown.

Iowa vs Michigan Early Spread & Total

The Iowa vs Michigan odds have Michigan favored by 5.5 points, with a total of 38.5 at BetMGM. The Wolverines are -220 on the moneyline, while Iowa is +180. I prefer the spread to paying that moneyline price.

For the under, Iowa’s run defense is just as relevant as Michigan’s. The Hawkeyes are allowing 66 rushing yards per game and 2.2 per carry. Michigan has averaged 4.1 yards per rush, so this is hardly a matchup where I expect the home offense to score at will.

A total this low leaves little room for defensive touchdowns or turnovers deep in a team’s own territory. Still, both defenses have shown enough to make sustained touchdown drives difficult. My under pick rests on that matchup, rather than assuming two unbeaten teams will automatically keep scoring at their September averages.

Michigan’s moneyline requires a higher win rate than a spread bet, but the spread introduces the risk of a narrow home victory. That distinction matters in a matchup priced for fewer than 40 total points.

Season statistics through September 19.

Iowa has the better raw offensive numbers, but its schedule includes two shutout wins over Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. Michigan’s 17-10 victory over Oklahoma offers a different test. I’m weighing those opponents alongside the averages rather than treating a three-game sample as a finished verdict.
