Week 5 of the 2026 college football season delivers a phenomenal Friday slate. We have unranked squads fighting for national attention and heavy road favorites trying to avoid a letdown. The Virginia Tech Hokies and Pittsburgh Panthers both sit at a perfect 4-0 and are knocking on the door of the AP Top 25.
Meanwhile, the Penn State Nittany Lions carry a 3-1 record and 98 poll votes into a tricky road environment. They face the 2-1 Northwestern Wildcats in a classic Big Ten field position battle. Liberty visits Delaware in Conference USA, while Montana State heads to Idaho for the FCS matchup.
I have combed through the board to find the most actionable betting angles for this slate. By digging into turnover differentials, red zone efficiency, and line movement, we can compare the strongest betting cases. Below, you can check out my favorite Friday college football picks, predictions and best bets for Oct. 2.
Friday CFB Spreads & Totals
- Liberty Flames -6.5 at Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens (Total 49.5)
- Pittsburgh Panthers at Virginia Tech Hokies -2.5 (Total 54.5)
- Penn State Nittany Lions -2.5 at Northwestern Wildcats (Total 45.5)
- Montana State Bobcats -16.5 at Idaho Vandals (Total 58.5)

The most dramatic line movement comes from Evanston. Penn State opened as a seven-point favorite but plummeted to a 2.5-point spread against Northwestern. The total also tanked from 48.5 down to 45.5.
In Blacksburg, Virginia Tech dipped slightly from an opening 3.5-point spread to 2.5 against Pittsburgh. Out west, the Montana State spread grew from 14.5 to 16.5 at Idaho. Liberty moved from a 7.5-point opening favorite to 6.5 at Delaware.

Penn State vs Northwestern Total Prediction
- Pick: Under 45.5 (-110 at bet365)
Penn State enters this matchup averaging 36.8 points and 427.2 yards per game. However, their bread and butter is an elite defense. The Nittany Lions boast a massive plus-seven turnover differential bolstered by five interceptions.
Northwestern averages a lower 32.7 points per game. The Wildcats own a flawless 100 percent red zone efficiency, but they will struggle to find scoring chances against this ball-hawking secondary. I expect Penn State to consistently win the field position battle and smother the home offense.
The total has fallen from 48.5 to 45.5, so some of the early value is gone. Still, Northwestern has allowed only 18 points per game, and Penn State has forced three-and-outs on 40.8% of opposing drives. Those defensive indicators support the under more directly than turnover margin alone.
Pittsburgh vs Virginia Tech Spread Pick
- Pick: Virginia Tech -2.5 (-110 at bet365)
Expect fireworks at Lane Stadium. Virginia Tech averages 43.3 points per game and boasts a flawless 100 percent red zone efficiency. Pittsburgh is nearly as dangerous, putting up 38.8 points and 523.8 total yards per contest.
While both offenses can move the chains, Virginia Tech has a pass rush worth respecting. The Hokies have already racked up 17 team sacks on the season. This relentless pass rush will disrupt the Panthers on crucial third downs and force hurried throws from the pocket.
Pittsburgh converts 50 percent of its third downs, but facing this defensive front is a different animal. I am laying the short number with the home favorite. Virginia Tech has the exact defensive profile needed to secure a narrow victory at home.
Montana State vs Idaho ATS Prediction
- Pick: Montana State -16.5 (-111 at Caesars Sportsbook)
Montana State generates a massive 435.8 total yards per game. The Bobcats excel at extending drives, converting at a 50 percent clip on third down. Their offense operates with incredible efficiency and gives them a route to controlling possession.
Idaho struggles mightily on the offensive side of the ball. The Vandals convert just 28.9 percent of their third downs and suffer from a miserable minus-five turnover differential. You simply cannot survive an elite opponent when you are constantly coughing up the football.
The Bobcats have already secured five interceptions this season. I expect their defense to create short fields and feast on a sloppy home offense. Montana State will dominate the ground and pound game, control possession, and cover this large spread, although a late Idaho score remains a concern.
