  • Compare my Canadiens vs Penguins prediction and NHL picks in this Eastern Conference rivalry
  • I’m staying on the Under (6.5, 52¢) due to the recent head-to-head in the 2025-26 season

Montreal visits Pittsburgh for an early-season Eastern Conference matchup at PPG Paints Arena on Oct. 3. Both teams are 1-0-0 after opening-night wins, but they took different routes to those records. The Canadiens won 3-2, while the Penguins opened with a 7-0 shutout.

Montreal is a slight favorite in the current market, although Pittsburgh is at home and carries the more emphatic opening result. Montreal also has one additional day of rest, having last played Sept. 29 compared with Pittsburgh’s Sept. 30 game.

The season is only one game old for each team, so the opening results provide useful context rather than a complete forecast. I am using the available matchup history, season-labelled team numbers and current prices to shape my two plays.

Under 6.5 goals

The Under 6.5 is my pick for this matchup. Montreal’s opener finished with five total goals, while Pittsburgh’s 7-0 result landed above this number. That contrast makes the total more informative than simply comparing final scores: one game was close and relatively low scoring, while the other was an outlier on the high side.

The one-game sample deserves caution. It does not establish a lasting scoring or defensive trend for either team, particularly this early in the 2026-27 season. Still, the recent series history supports a lower total. Two of the clubs’ three 2025-26 meetings finished under 6.5 goals, including a 4-0 Montreal win and a 4-2 Canadiens victory.

The third meeting ended 4-3 after a shootout, which put the full-game total over 6.5, though the regulation score was under 6.5 goals. With two unders in the last three meetings and a modest price on the Under, I prefer this market to the side.

Canadiens vs Penguins Picks & Puck Line

  • Pittsburgh to win (47¢ at Kalshi)

Pittsburgh is my secondary pick to win outright. The Penguins are home after scoring seven goals in their opener, and their 2025-26 offense averaged 3.58 goals per game with a 24.6% power play. Those numbers give the home team a credible path even though Montreal is the slight favorite.

Montreal’s place in the Stanley Cup Odds picture is backed by a 2025-26 finish of 106 points, compared with Pittsburgh’s 98. The Canadiens also have the rest advantage here. That makes the Penguins’ 47-cent price a more selective home-side play rather than a claim that Pittsburgh is the stronger overall team. I am backing the Penguins to win, but the Under remains my preferred wager.

Canadiens vs Penguins Matchup & Rest Advantage

Montreal and Pittsburgh bring contrasting season-opening results into this meeting. The Canadiens scored three goals and allowed two; the Penguins scored seven and allowed none. Those figures are descriptive, not predictive on their own, because each team has played only once.

The broader 2025-26 numbers show Montreal finished with a 48-24-10 record and 106 points. Pittsburgh went 41-25-16 and finished with 98 points. Montreal averaged 3.40 goals per game, while Pittsburgh averaged 3.58. On special teams, Montreal’s power play was 23.0% and penalty kill was 78.%; Pittsburgh posted a 24.6% power play and an 81.7% penalty kill.

Montreal enters with three days of rest and Pittsburgh with two. The difference is worth noting, but it is not large enough to erase Pittsburgh’s home-ice setting or the current 47-cent price.
