  • Detroit’s elite red-zone execution (78.57% touchdown rate) provides a massive edge vs a porous Carolina defense

The Detroit Lions (2-1) travel to Charlotte to face the Carolina Panthers (1-2) at Bank of America Stadium. Kickoff takes place on Sunday, October 4, at 8:20 PM ET, with the national broadcast on NBC/Peacock. Detroit won last week over the Jets and sets up as a confident road favorite. Conversely, Carolina seeks to bounce back from a loss to Cleveland and defend home turf as an underdog.

Detroit boasts an elite attack led by quarterback Jared Goff and star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Lions aim to exploit a youthful Panthers roster. Meanwhile, Carolina relies on quarterback Bryce Young, who practices fully despite a knee designation.

Young faces a tough challenge, as his receiving corps suffers from critical attrition. Xavier Legette is out with a knee injury, and Jalen Coker operates in a limited capacity due to a quad issue. Furthermore, interior defensive line limitations compromise Carolina’s ability to stop the run.

Lions vs Panthers Predictions & Expert Picks

Over/Under Prediction: Over 51 Points (-108 at BetMGM)

Back the Over 51 in what projects to be a highly productive offensive showcase on Sunday Night Football. Bettors can also look to Kalshi, where “Over 50.5 points” trades at 52¢, offering a slightly lower threshold. Both of these units bring serious seasonal efficiency into this contest.

Total Yards Per Game368.3392.7
Third Down Conversion %41.2%36.8%
Turnover Differential+3+2

When two high-scoring offenses that protect the football match up, extended drives and explosive scoring are the most likely outcome. Detroit enters Week 4 averaging an electric 31.0 points per game – having scored exactly 31 points in all three contests this season—while committing just a single giveaway all year.

Carolina nearly matches that pace at 29.7 points and 392.7 total yards of offense per game, highlighted by a 37-point explosion in Week 1 and a 34-point showing in Week 2. With Detroit converting third downs at a reliable 41.2% clip (14-of-34) and both defenses surrendering over 27.5 points per game (31.7 PPG allowed by Detroit, 27.7 PPG allowed by Carolina), the total points should easily eclipse the 51-point threshold.

Spread Prediction: Detroit Lions -3.5 (-114 at BetMGM)

The battle in the trenches overwhelmingly favors the visiting Lions. Detroit consistently disrupts opposing backfields, racking up 12.0 sacks this season (tied for second in the NFL with 5.0 sacks in Week 1 and 5.0 in Week 3) compared to 6.0 for Carolina. The Panthers must mitigate this intense pressure while their own defensive front deals with key injuries. Watch for Aidan Hutchinson when he lines up against rookie Monroe Freeling on the right side.

Defensive tackles Cam Jackson and Lee Hunter are operating at limited capacity, compromising the defense against a potent Detroit rushing attack that averages 120.7 yards on the ground and features a two-headed monster in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Alternatively, taking “Lions win by over 3.5 points” at 52¢ on Kalshi provides an interesting payout structure.

Furthermore, Detroit possesses a massive edge when drives reach scoring position. The Lions boast an elite 78.6% red-zone touchdown conversion rate (11 touchdowns on 14 trips), heavily outperforming the 61.5% mark from Carolina (8 touchdowns on 13 trips).

Even more glaringly, Carolina’s defense has allowed touchdowns on 85.7% of opponents’ red-zone trips (6 of 7). When Detroit gets inside the 20-yard line, drives finish with seven points, giving the road favorites the decisive push needed to cover the 3.5-point spread.

Best Player Prop Bet: Tetairoa McMillan Over 70.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at BetMGM)

A deep dive into the injury report exposes a severely depleted receiving corps for Carolina. Wide receiver Xavier Legette is ruled out with a knee injury, while Jalen Coker is hampered by a quad injury. With Bryce Young needing a reliable and healthy target on the perimeter against a Detroit defense that ranks dead last in passing yards allowed at 299.3 net pass YPG, reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan is poised to step into a massive volume share.

McMillan has already demonstrated high-end alpha usage, racking up 193 receiving yards on 23 targets through his first three games, including a 75-yard performance on 8 targets in Week 1 and a 101-yard explosion on 10 targets in Week 2. Facing Detroit’s vulnerable secondary—which just allowed 41 points to Buffalo and 30 to New Orleans—McMillan’s receiving yard total of 70.5 is a highly exploitable number given the guaranteed spike in target share he receives out of pure necessity.

McMillan had issues against Denzel Ward last week, but the Lions do not have a cover corner nearly as good as Ward, so McMillan should be clear sailing. Given Detroit’s tendency to run man coverage, I expect McMillan to be the target repeatedly until the Lions adjust.
