Both New Mexico State and FIU are looking to establish momentum as they clash tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. New Mexico State recently dismantled Western Kentucky, while FIU secured a commanding victory over LIU.

Under the lights at Pitbull Stadium in Miami, this under-the-radar matchup pits an aggressive ground and pound offense against a surprisingly resilient defensive front. It is a classic battle of tempo and field position.

Below are my New Mexico State vs FIU prediction, odds and best bet for this Oct. 7 showdown.

New Mexico State vs FIU Prediction

  • My Pick: New Mexico State Moneyline (+176 at theScore Bet)

My New Mexico State vs FIU prediction backs the Aggies outright because of their edge in scoring production. New Mexico State is generating 27.8 points per game, significantly outpacing an FIU unit that averages a meager 18 points. While FIU holds a minor advantage in total yardage, New Mexico State is far more efficient when sustaining drives. If New Mexico State can extend possessions with timely third down conversions, they can keep FIU’s offense on the sideline.

The catalyst for my prediction is New Mexico State running back James Jones. Jones has already racked up 510 rushing yards and three touchdowns, establishing a physical ground and pound identity. FIU’s defensive schemes are stingy, allowing only 80.8 rushing yards per game and 14.5 points overall, making this the central matchup for my pick.

On the other side, FIU quarterback JJ Kohl has shown pocket presence but remains prone to costly mistakes, tossing six interceptions against five touchdowns. With FIU struggling with red zone efficiency, I expect New Mexico State to dictate the field position battle. New Mexico State also got a lift from Adam Damante in his first start of the season against Western Kentucky: 146 passing yards, a touchdown pass and a rushing score.

New Mexico State vs FIU Best Bet

  • My Best Bet: FIU Team Total Under 26.5 (-106 at theScore Bet)

My New Mexico State vs FIU best bet is FIU under 26.5 points. FIU has only managed to score 72 total points across four games, leaning heavily on an air raid offense that produces a lot of empty yardage. The Panthers have scored 30 points combined over their last two games, including a 20-3 win over LIU.

New Mexico State’s defense has shown vulnerability through the air, allowing 242.8 passing yards per game, but they tighten up when it counts. Meanwhile, FIU’s ground game is virtually non-existent. Anthony Carrie leads the backfield with a mere 195 rushing yards and zero touchdowns. Without a reliable rushing attack to balance the offense, FIU becomes entirely one-dimensional and easy to defend.

Total Yards Allowed Per Game373.4245.8

Under 26.5 leaves room for FIU to exceed its 18-point season average and still stay below this number. FIU’s negative turnover differential and inability to sustain drives in opponent territory make them a highly untrustworthy unit. I expect New Mexico State to control the clock with their running game, limiting FIU’s offensive possessions and keeping the Panthers below their team total.
