As we head into Week 5 of the NFL season, the injury bug is making its presence felt, sending inevitable ripples through the betting markets. For sharp bettors like myself, staying ahead of the latest injury designations is critical to spotting value on the spread, adjusting expectations for point totals, and finding a definitive edge on player props.

I always evaluate overall team health just as closely as individual star power. The Washington Commanders enter the week with a staggering 23 players on their injury report, making depth a serious concern for their defensive schemes. The Los Angeles Chargers (18 players) and New England Patriots (15 players) are also managing incredibly crowded medical tents.

In this article, I am breaking down the most impactful injury updates and uncertain statuses across the Week 5 slate. We will evaluate the latest NFL odds from DraftKings as of Thursday to help you navigate the chaos, take multiple bites at the apple, and make informed wagers.

Week 5 NFL Injury Report: Key Updates and Statuses to Monitor

Keeping tabs on the medical tent is a full-time job during the NFL season. While most players will play through minor bumps and bruises, the statuses of a select few franchise cornerstones dictate how sportsbooks shape their closing lines. Below is my roundup of the most notable stars currently dealing with injuries ahead of Week 5.

Elite Injury Notes & Situational Betting Impact

While an injury to a starting guard or rotational linebacker might alter the field position battle, they rarely force oddsmakers to adjust the spread. However, a handful of players are true line-movers. Here is my read on the superstars whose current medical statuses are heavily impacting the Week 5 betting boards.

Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens

Jackson is the ultimate line-mover, and his official “Out” designation with an ankle injury is the most consequential news of the week. Without their MVP utilizing his elite pocket presence and dual-threat ability, the Ravens have shifted to 3.5-point underdogs on the consensus spread against the Atlanta Falcons.

Before Jackson’s injury (and Atlanta’s demolition of the Saints on Monday Night Football), the Ravens were decent favorites in this bird battle. As the Ravens turn to Tyler Huntley, the line has shifted by a full touchdown.

Based on historical NFL ATS records, teams missing their starting quarterback on the road cover the spread less than 40% of the time (hitting at just 38.5% over the last three seasons). Backing the Ravens at +146 on the moneyline is a risky proposition; I am pulling the trigger on the Falcons against the spread instead.

Caleb Williams, QB, Bears

Williams is out with a hamstring injury after missing practice. The Bears are listed as 1.5-point road favorites over the Green Bay Packers, but that line may move with the confirmed absence. Chicago will turn to its backup quarterback (likely Tyson Bagent, but Ben Johnson might start Week 5 with 11 quarterbacks on the field, so who knows), so reassess the spread and 45.5-point total once sportsbooks update their numbers; any Under angle depends on the replacement and the revised price.

Justin Jefferson, WR, Vikings

Wide receivers rarely move the spread on their own, but Jefferson is the exception to the rule. He managed limited practice participation with an ankle and leg injury and carries a “Questionable” tag. To make matters worse, offensive playmakers like running back Aaron Jones Sr (limited) and receiver Jordan Addison (DNP) are also banged up. The Vikings are currently laying 2.5 points on the road against the New Orleans Saints.

If Jefferson is ultimately ruled out, expect that spread to dip below the key number of 3, and for the 42.5-point total to adjust downward as the Vikings lose their most explosive weapon. With NFL public betting largely backing the road favorites, a Jefferson absence provides sharp contrarian value on the Saints.

Without Jefferson (and other targets), expect Kyler Murray to continue to lean on T.J. Hockenson, especially against a Saints team that has surrendered solid performances to tight ends this season.

Saquon Barkley, RB, Eagles

Barkley missed practice with a hamstring injury, and he is listed as out for the Eagles’ international clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Eagles are already staggering 7.5-point underdogs in London. Running backs typically don’t move the spread more than a half-point, but taking their most reliable weapon off the field is a crushing blow, especially with typical overcast weather expected across the pond.

Compounding the issue, the Eagles will also be without DeVonta Smith (hamstring), stripping away their primary receiving threat. On the bright side, Dallas Goedert is expected to be back. Bettors looking at the consensus 41.5-point total should hammer the Under, as offenses missing their top rusher and top pass-catchers historically suffer a massive negative shift in turnover differential.

Ja’Marr Chase, WR, Bengals

Chase is working his way through concussion protocol but logged a full practice session, earning a “Questionable” tag with an optimistic outlook. The Bengals are commanding 6.5-point favorites over the Miami Dolphins at ESPN Bet, indicating that oddsmakers expect the passing offense to be firing on all cylinders. However, fellow wideout Tee Higgins is also questionable. If both receivers suit up, the Bengals’ implied vig-free probability of winning outright sits at an overwhelming 74.3%.

Then again, it is the 2026 Miami Dolphins on the schedule. The Bengals would almost certainly be fine even without Chase and Higgins.

Malik Nabers (Giants) & Jayden Daniels (Commanders)

Looking at this divisional clash, Nabers was limited in practice with a shoulder issue, earning a questionable tag. On the other sideline, the Commanders should have Daniels under center, as he logged a full practice despite an elbow injury and is probable to play. Given the Commanders’ massive 23-man injury report mentioned earlier, Daniels’ health is the focal point keeping their offense afloat. If Nabers misses out for the Giants, betting the Under on their team total is the smartest situational play on the board.
