The New Jersey Devils (2-3-0) visit the Detroit Red Wings (1-3-1) Tuesday evening at Little Caesars Arena as part of NHL Frozen Frenzy. New Jersey dropped a 4-1 decision to Ottawa yesterday despite outshooting the Senators 30-20. Detroit has been off since Saturday’s 1-0 shootout loss to Montreal, where Daniil Tarasov stopped all 30 shots he faced through regulation and overtime.
Jack Hughes leads New Jersey with five points (1 goal, 4 assists) through five games, while Alex DeBrincat paces Detroit with five points of his own (2 goals, 3 assists). Viktor Arvidsson has three power-play goals for the Red Wings already this season.
Puck drop is at 6 pm ET. Here are my Devils vs Red Wings prediction and best bets, plus the latest NHL odds for tonight’s Frozen Frenzy matchup.
Devils vs Red Wings Prediction
- Detroit Red Wings to win (51¢ on Kalshi)
My Devils vs Red Wings prediction is on Detroit at home. The rest advantage is the primary angle here. New Jersey is playing its second game in under 24 hours after yesterday’s loss in Ottawa, and I expect that quick turnaround to favor the home side. Detroit has had two full days off since Saturday.
The Devils generate massive shot volume (181 shots for, just 129 against through five games), so they’ll likely control possession even on a back-to-back. But New Jersey has scored just 11 goals in five games, meaning all those shots aren’t translating to goals at the rate you’d expect. Detroit has allowed 25.4 shots per game and carries a .897 team save percentage, so they’re capable of absorbing pressure.
At 51 cents on prediction market apps, this is essentially a coin flip. I’ll take the rested side at home.
Devils vs Red Wings Best Bets
- Under 6.0 Goals (-105 at BetMGM)
My Devils vs Red Wings best bet on the total is the under. New Jersey is averaging 2.20 goals per game and Detroit is at 2.00 through five games each. Neither offense has found a consistent rhythm yet.
Both penalty kills have been below average (NJ 68.8%, DET 70.0%), which could open the door for special teams scoring. But those are small five-game samples, and the back-to-back factor should slow New Jersey’s pace. Tarasov’s 30-save shutout performance Saturday gives Detroit a strong crease option if he gets the nod over Gibson.
At -105, the under 6.0 is a fair price with a push at exactly six. New users can check the BetMGM promo code page for sign-up offers.
Devils vs Red Wings Odds
Winner prices from Kalshi. Totals from BetMGM, converted to American odds. Odds as of October 13, 2:30 PM EDT.
The Devils vs Red Wings odds are as tight as they come. Detroit is 51 cents on Kalshi and New Jersey is 50 cents, making this a true pick’em on the prediction market. The total is set at 6.0 with the under at -105 and the over juiced to -115.
Devils vs Red Wings Team Stats
The Devils vs Red Wings stats show New Jersey averaging 36.2 shots per game while allowing just 25.8. The Devils have allowed 18 goals in five games compared to Detroit’s 14, excluding the deciding shootout goal. The save percentage gap (.867 vs .897) tells part of that story.
Nico Hischier scored two power-play goals against Vancouver on October 10, and Arvidsson’s three power-play goals lead Detroit. Both teams can score on the man advantage, but neither penalty kill inspires confidence in these small samples.
Devils vs Red Wings Goalies and Injuries
The Devils vs Red Wings goalie matchup remains projected. Jake Allen is the projected goalie for New Jersey. Detroit could go with John Gibson or Tarasov, who was excellent Saturday with 30 saves in the shootout loss to Montreal.
New Jersey: Connor Brown (undisclosed, day-to-day), Nick Bjugstad (pectoral, out), Seamus Casey (knee, out)
Detroit: Marco Kasper (upper body, IR), J.T. Compher (undisclosed, IR), Mason Appleton (undisclosed, IR)
Puck drop for the Devils vs Red Wings game is at 6 pm ET from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
