  • Tuesday’s Avalanche vs Stars matchup pairs Colorado’s high-scoring attack with Dallas’s strong goaltending
  • I’m backing the Stars to win a low scoring game
  • Read below for the Avalanche vs Stars odds, prediction and Tuesday NHL picks

The Colorado Avalanche (3-2-0) visit the Dallas Stars (2-2-1) tonight at American Airlines Center. This is the first half of a home-and-home set, with the rematch Wednesday in Denver.

Colorado’s offense has been rolling with 26 goals in five games, but the defense has been leaky at 17 goals against. Dallas is the opposite: seven goals allowed before shootout deciders through five contests, but only 11 scored. These two stylistic extremes should make for a fascinating clash.

Puck drop is at 8:30 pm ET on ESPN. Here are the Avalanche vs Stars odds, my prediction and Tuesday NHL picks.

My Avalanche vs Stars prediction is on Dallas at home to beat one of the Stanley Cup odds favorites. The Stars have allowed seven goals before shootout deciders in five games and limit opponents to 22 shots per game (110 shots against in five contests). Colorado is averaging 3.4 goals against per game, meaning they’ve needed their offense to bail them out repeatedly.

The goaltending gap supports the play. Jake Oettinger is projected to start with a .963 save percentage and 0.74 GAA through four appearances. Mackenzie Blackwood is the expected starter for Colorado and carries a .867 save percentage and 3.30 GAA through four games. Neither is confirmed, but if these two get the nod, the crease advantage is significant.

At 52 cents on Kalshi, this is a near-even price on a home team with a clear defensive edge. Colorado’s contract sits at 48 cents.

Avalanche vs Stars Tuesday NHL Picks

  • Under 6 Goals (-115 at BetMGM)

Colorado has been an over machine early on, with four of five games clearing six total goals. But Dallas games have produced totals of 4, 3, 5, 4 and 3 so far this season. Not a single Stars game has reached six goals, including their most recent 2-1 shootout loss to Pittsburgh.

Dallas’ penalty kill has been strong at 88.2% (15-for-17), which should limit Colorado’s power play (4-for-18, 22.2%). The Stars’ own power play has been poor (1-for-13), so they’re not likely to inflate the total from their end either. This Avalanche vs Stars best bet is on the under at -115, trusting Dallas to keep this game tight at home.

The Avalanche vs Stars stats show two teams built in completely different ways. Colorado generates 32.4 shots per game and scores at a high rate, but allows 128 shots against in five games. Dallas generates less offense (124 shots for) but suppresses opponents to 22 shots per game and converts defensively at an exceptional rate.

Oettinger’s early-season form has been a major factor in Dallas’ defensive numbers. His .963 save percentage and 0.74 GAA through four appearances put him in the early Vezina Trophy odds conversation, though it’s a tiny sample. Blackwood’s .867 save percentage and 3.30 GAA through four games tell the other side of this story. Colorado needs its offense to stay hot because the goaltending hasn’t been providing much of a cushion.
