  • The race for Ohio’s Senate seat could be the tipping point for control of the Senate, with former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown slightly ahead of incumbent Sen. Jon Husted in most polls
  • The Buckeye State has gone from purplish to reliably red, but if Ohio falls to the Democrats, they are all but assured to take the majority in the upper chamber
  • Prediction markets are tracking the Ohio Senate odds, and traders can jump in and potentially profit if they make the right pick

The Ohio Senate odds could be one of the key indicators as to which party will take control of the upper chamber for the final two years of President Donald J. Trump’s second term. If incumbent Republican Sen. Jon Husted holds onto the seat, the GOP might hold onto its majority; if former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown wins, then the Dems are set to have a big night and achieve their blue wave.

This is crucial for both sides. If the Republicans hold the Senate, the president’s agenda can remain largely on track. If the Democrats take it after almost certainly winning the House of Representatives, they can blunt much of Trump’s plans as they set the stage to try and retake the White House in 2028. Although all trends and common factors point in the direction of the Democrats in the midterm elections in general and Ohio in particular, the polls and recent history suggest that the race could go either way with a likely tilt toward the Republicans.

Given the stakes and those realities, it is understandable that prediction markets are paying such close attention to Ohio, with investors given the opportunity to jump in with their picks on how the race will turn out.

Sherrod Brown Leads Ohio Senate Odds Two Weeks From Election

Trading volume for this market is massive, having already surpassed $7.75 million. The Ohio Senate winner is currently one of the highest liquidity markets amongst Kalshi midterms trading options.

Sherrod Brown is well in front with a 65% implied probability. Husted is at 35%.

Sherrod Brown (D)

The soon-to-be 74-year-old Brown is a known quantity in Ohio. He spent three terms in the Senate before losing to Sen. Bernie Moreno in 2024. Now he’s back and facing Husted, the former lieutenant governor for Gov. Mike DeWine. He was appointed to replace JD Vance when Vance left his Senate seat to be Trump’s vice president.

Brown is a likable, happy-go-lucky sort who, given today’s Democratic lurch to the left, is relatively moderate and works with the other party. While his status as a liberal might be a challenge for him in a “normal” year, Ohio is experiencing economic problems stemming from Trump’s policies, and the electorate is unhappy with the House and Senate GOP just going along with him without pushback. His implied probability on the market is approaching two-thirds of investors thinking he will win.

But it should not be forgotten that Ohio, once viewed as a state that could go either way, has become reliably Republican. Still, the governorship is at stake, and Democrat Amy Acton has a safe lead over Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. In a close Senate race, the number of voters who just tick the D candidates could put Brown over the top.

Jon Husted (R)

Husted would not be in the Senate at all were it not for the sequence of events that opened up the seat for Gov. DeWine to name a replacement. The 59-year-old is affable in his own right and worked his way into this position. He is conservative, but does not seem to be an ideologue. He is pro-business, advocates for border security, supports tax cuts, and wants to prevent trans athletes from competing in female competitions.

It’s a reasonably normal Republican platform. In short, he’s what Bill Maher would call “Republican Classic.”

Again, in a normal year, he’d be safe in reddish Ohio. But now? With Trump’s unpopularity and a known quantity in Brown as Husted’s opponent? With Husted having been appointed and not elected? It’s wide open, and the polls are screaming it.

Regardless of who wins — and it will be tight on Election Day — the prediction markets with Ohio Senate odds are such for each candidate that there is good profit to be had whichever way the investor chooses to go.
