The UMass Minutemen (4-4, 1-3 MAC) return home looking to snap a four-game skid after a 35-16 loss at UConn. The Ball State Cardinals (3-5, 2-2 MAC) arrive on a two-game win streak, most recently a 34-17 win over Sacramento State in which Keldric Luster threw for 234 yards and ran for 68 more.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET Wednesday, Nov. 4, on ESPNU from Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst. The all-time series is tied 2-2, and the programs have not met since Ball State won 20-10 in 2015.
I priced both of my plays on Kalshi, where the winner, spread and total markets are all live. Here is my Ball State vs UMass prediction, plus my Wednesday CFB picks for this MACtion matchup.
Ball State vs UMass Prediction
Prediction: UMass wins at home, and the game stays under 49.5 total points.
Ball State has real momentum. The Cardinals have averaged 395.5 total yards over their last four games, well above their 337.5 season average. Luster’s dual-threat production is the biggest reason, as he went 14-of-27 through the air and added 68 rushing yards against Sacramento State.
Away from Muncie, though, the Cardinals have been a different team. Their only road win came in a 32-31 overtime escape at Bowling Green, where Luster ran for 125 yards and TJ Horton added two rushing touchdowns. A midweek trip to Amherst is a tougher spot than hosting Sacramento State.
UMass needs this game more. The Minutemen have dropped four straight, but two of those losses came by one point to Miami (OH) and in overtime at Buffalo. Home field and a 60¢ market price both point their way to the Minutemen.
Ball State vs UMass Spread
Kalshi lists UMass -3.5 with Yes at 48¢ and the opposite side at 53¢. That is close to a coin flip, which tells you how tight this game projects. You can compare that number with the college football odds at traditional sportsbooks.
I prefer the winner market here. UMass scored between 14 and 19 points in each of its four straight losses, so I would rather not ask the Minutemen to win by a margin. Paying 60¢ for the outright win keeps the bet simple.
Wednesday CFB Picks for Ball State vs UMass
Kalshi prices UMass at 60¢ to win, a 60% implied probability, with Ball State at 41¢. The Under costs 51¢, so the total is priced as a near coin flip.

Ball State vs UMass Pick #1: UMass to Win
- Pick: UMass to Win
At 60¢, UMass needs to win this game more than 60% of the time for the price to hold value. I think the home side clears that bar against a Ball State team that has struggled on the road all season.
The risk is Luster. If he extends plays with his legs the way he did at Bowling Green, Ball State can steal this one. UMass has to contain him and force the Cardinals to sustain long drives. Luster did throw a pair of interceptions last week, so he is quite capable of throwing the game away as well.
Ball State vs UMass Pick #2: Under 49.5 Total Points
- Pick: Under 49.5
UMass has not topped 19 points since its 35-6 win at Sacramento State. Four straight games in the 14-to-19 range make it hard to see the Minutemen carrying their share of a 50-point game.
UMass is 83rd in the nation in scoring at 26.5 points per game. The defense has been impressive, allowing just 21.1 points per game, good for a top-50 mark in the country.
Ball State’s recent yardage surge is the main threat to this pick. But outside the Bowling Green overtime game, the Cardinals have not scored more than 15 points on the road this season. At 51¢, I will take the Under.
Ball State is 108th in the country in scoring at just 22.0 points per game. The Cardinals’ defense has been shaky at times, but their three worst performances by points allowed were out of conference in losses to Ohio State (56), Liberty (51), and Northwestern (45). Ball State has allowed 28 points per game in MAC play compared to over 35 points per game total.
