2024 Belmont Stakes Odds Top Contenders

Here are some notes on the movement of the top contenders for the 156th Belmont Stakes:

  • [Jun 7] No major updates to report with less than 24 hours to go before the start of the Belmont Stakes. No horses have been scratched and Sierra Leone, Mindframe, and Mystik Dan all remain as the three horses to beat.
  • [Jun 4] The field of ten horses has been set! Early favorites Sierra Leone (+180) and Mystik Dan (+500) are now confirmed and are in posts #9 and #3, respectively. To Sierra Leone’s right in the #10 post is Mindframe (+350), who did not run in either the Preakness or Kentucky Derby, but has won both his starts by seven lengths.
  • [May 27] Catching Freedom, once one of the favorites in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, is currently not getting early odds for the Belmont. Though he may yet be one of the horses listed when the post positions are announced, for the moment he’s only listed as a “possible” contender in the current odds.
  • [May 21] Despite his 15th-place finish at Churchill Downs, pre-Kentucky Derby favorite Fierceness (+300) opens as the favorite to win the 156th Belmont Stakes. Not far behind is Sierra Leone (+350), while Derby and Preakness winners Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey are +900 and +1500, respectively.

Most Belmont Stakes Jockey Wins

Since 2010, only three jockeys have won multiple times at the Belmont Stakes: Mike Smith, with Justify (2018), Palace Malice (2013), and Drosselmeyer (2010); Joel Rosario, with Sir Winston (2019) and Tonalist (2014); and Irad Ortiz Jr,  with Mo Donegal (2022) and American Pharoah (2016).

Javier Castellano’s win in 2023 with Arcangelo was the jockey’s first Belmont Stakes win.

Most Belmont Stakes Trainer Wins

2023 was also a first-time Belmont Stakes win for trainer Jena Antonucci. Not only was she the first female trainer to win the Belmont Stakes, but also the first female trainer to win any of the American Triple Crown races.

She has a long way to go to catch all-time leader James Rowe, who has trained eight winning Belmont horses, with the last coming in 1931. Todd Pletcher is doing his best to close that gap, now boasting four Belmont wins after Essential Quality’s win in 2022.

Belmont Stakes Bets You Can Make

  • Win bet
  • Place bet
  • Show bet
  • Exacta
  • Trifecta
  • Superfecta

Win, Place & Show Preakness Stakes Bets

The three main types of horse racing bets you can make for the Belmont Stakes will be win, place and show bets.

A win bet is pretty straightforward. If you bet on a horse to win they need to finish in first place.

If you bet on a horse to place, the payout will be smaller, but they can finish in the top two.

A bet on a horse to show means they can come in either first, second or third.

Exacta, Trifecta & Superfecta Preakness Stakes Bets

The parlays of horse betting are the exotic bets that often include exactas. trifectas and superfectas.

In an exacta, you’re picking two horses that need to both finish in the top two in exact order.

A trifecta is picking three horses to finish in the top three in a certain order. And finally, a superfecta is picking four horses to finish in the top four in the correct order.

You are also able to “box” any of these options where they can finish in top two, three or four in any order.
