UPDATE: BetMGM Currently Down Due to Global IT Outages

UPDATE: BetMGM came back online at July 20.

A massive, worldwide IT outage has disrupted business Friday, affecting air travel, doctors’ offices, and even television broadcasts.

One other area affected? Online sports betting services.

BetMGM reported this morning that it is offline as it works through issues brought upon by the faulty update from CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm that provides IT for many key business sectors around the world.

Temporary Issues for BetMGM

BetMGM alerted its customers to the outage this morning. A BetMGM spokesperson told Sports Betting Dime the following:

“BetMGM is experiencing temporary issues due to global IT outages. We are working hard to resolve this and will update customers when we are up and running. Thank you for your patience,” the spokesperson said.

It’s the same message that BetMGM has shared with affected users through its social media platforms.

Users have taken to X and reported the outage has likely affected all of the states where BetMGM is operational. When trying to sign into their accounts, users have been greeted with a message claiming that “something went wrong.”

It’s unknown when services will be restored or when users will be able to access their accounts.

Affecting Computers Running Windows

The CrowdStrike outage is currently affecting computers running Windows, stemming from an update that causes computers to display the “blue screen of death” and be unable to reboot. According to Forbes, the problem comes from a faulty CrowdStrike cybersecurity software update, which has caused the widespread global issues.

The IT outage has affected airports, businesses, and even broadcasting companies. The U.S. has grounded flights in the country, the U.K. has limited train travel, and airport security systems have also been limited from the outage.

CrowdStrike’s President and CEO George Kurtz  posted on X this morning that the issue was not caused by a cyber attack.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected. We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier, the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts,” he said.
