The BKFC world heavyweight title and the Police Gazette world heavyweight title are up for grabs in the main event with champion Joey Beltran looking to halt the challenge of Marcel Stamps.

Joey Beltran Defending His Titles

Beltran was regarded as a journeyman fighter for years, a durable and exciting guy who posted a mixed-martial-arts record of 18-15 while fighting for promotions like UFC and Bellator MMA.

Joey Beltran began his BKFC run as an exciting but somewhat inconsistent fighter. He had a 1-1-1 record across his first three appearances knuckling up.

Beltran now has back to back wins on the BKFC circuit with his last outing seeing him take the BKFC and Police Gazette heavyweight titles from Chase Sherman via unanimous decision at BKFC 9.

Going from a gatekeeper in mixed-martial arts to being a world champion in bare-knuckle boxing is the stuff of Hollywood screenplays.

Beltran captured the Police Gazette Diamond championship, which has the richest lineage of any combat sports title in North America stretching back over a century to John L. Sullivan, and this seemed to send his combat confidence to new heights.

After almost a year out of BKFC competition, Beltran seems poised to make his inaugural title defenses at BKFC 13.

Marcel Stamps’ Quest to Become Champ

Marcel Stamps should not be overlooked but he comes in as an inauspicious title contender.

While Stamps has only logged a lone victory within BKFC, the win was a highlight reel worthy performance. Marcel Stamps dispatched tenured MMA veteran Kendall Grove at BKFC 3 in October 2018.

During his two years away from the BKFC ring, Stamps kept busy by taking four MMA fights where he posted a .500 record.

The 35-year-old former football player from the University of Alabama readies himself for the highest stakes prizefight of his combat sports career so far.

A lot of fans and pundits alike seem to be breaking this fight down to either Stamps winning with his speed and athleticism advantage or Beltran getting it done through his gritty resolve and savvy veteran abilities.

Ultimately, I think Beltran will be able to retain his championships at BKFC 13 this weekend and win via decision.

Pick: Joey Beltran (-200)

Nico Hernandez vs Chancey Wilson

Both co-main event combatants will be making their promotional debuts here at BKFC 13.

Hernandez captured the bronze medal in Boxing at the 2016 Olympics and sports a 7-0 pro record with four knockouts. Nico Hernandez does intend to don the gloves once more going forward but did not clarify whether or not he’ll concurrently fight in boxing as well as bare-knuckle boxing.

Wilson enters this bout with a 2-4 MMA record. These metrics of both men might make some confused as to why the line is closer than it perhaps should be. I think Wilson presents some level of underdog value here considering how well MMA fighters generally do in the BKFC compared to Boxers that crossover.

Boxers don’t have a great deal of competitive experience working in clinch positions as referees under Queensberry rules break up fighters pretty much instantaneously when they lock up. Conversely in MMA, clinch positions are a crucial part of the ruleset and the BKFC ruleset allows for more than enough time in clinch positions to work.

The Greco roman experience of MMA fighters in live competition seems to give them an edge over pure boxers coming over.

There are also other factors of how quick Hernandez is able to adapt, how unsure he’ll be with what shots to throw, maintaining the health of his hands versus mindful economy of effort, etc.

I think there’s underdog value in Wilson getting a decision victory.

Pick: Chancey Wilson (+300)
