This is a big step up in competition for Smith as he takes on an adversary in Alvarez who has one of the finest resumes in the sweet science today.

Canelo’s Sole Fight of 2020

Canelo Alvarez is a four-weight world champion, and this is his first fight of the calendar year.

He is regarded by many as the number one pound for pound ranked boxer in the sport at this juncture and it makes sense that he is a sizable favorite heading into this weekend’s pugilistic proceedings.

The only pro defeat Alvarez has taken is to Floyd Mayweather. In his last outing, Canelo unseated longtime light heavyweight boogeyman Sergey Kovalev from his throne and claimed gold at 175 pounds with an eleventh round knockout.

Alvarez has an incredibly well-rounded skill set where he can partake in brilliant in-fighting with heavy punching power and alternate towards a more volume punching intensive defensive savvy style when situationally appropriate.

Callum Smith: The Underdog Champion

While Alvarez’s pound for pound distinction is notable, Smith is seen by many as the best super middleweight on the planet today. Callum Smith is the Ring Magazine, and WBA champion heading into this prizefight and this also marks his first bout of 2020.

There’s also a redemptive component to this contest as Smith looks to avenge the loss of his brother Liam who was stopped by Canelo in a 2016 light middleweight title fight.

I feel as if many are underrating Smith here due to the lackluster nature of his last performance. In his last fight, Smith bested John Ryder on the official scorecards in a bout many ringside observers felt he lost.

Smith has nearly an eight-inch reach advantage, has remarkable power in his hands, and has a varied skillset that translates a refined fight IQ.

If Callum Smith shows up in his prime form, he presents good underdog value in this fight.

This bout is scheduled for twelve rounds, but I would go with the prop bet that it does not Go the Distance (-200).

In the end, I would go with props on Canelo by KO or TKO (-115) as well as Canelo winning between rounds 7-12 (+180)

Pick: Canelo Alvarez (-670)
