At age 34, Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) finally fights the mandated IBF Super Middleweight (now champion) in William Scull. Dropping back to 168 pounds after the Dmitry Bivol loss was probably for the best.

In the last few fights, Alvarez has been faster and more able to throw combinations that have impact. More importantly, he holds massive advantages in fight quantity and opponents faced. Canelo controls the ring and the pace. If he wants to take Scull out to make a statement, he will have his chances.

William Scull Boxing Analysis

William Scull is unbeaten (23-0, 9 KOs) and the IBF Super Middleweight champion. Remember, this is the belt that Canelo walked away from in 2024. Scull goes up the ladder in a big way for this bout. The 32-year-old Cuban has won five straight decisions with a combination of defense and evasiveness.

But again, does Scull get caught up in the moment. His path to a victory is getting a decision. However, a defensive style like this could be great food for Canelo. Scull knows he has to be active against a champion with something to prove.

While a knockout or knockdown feels out of the question, some are going to be surprised that Scull will throw more punches than usual. If he does not, the Cuban likely does not make it the distance even with his 2.5 inch reach advantage.

William Scull is an able fighter that has done well in achieving what so few fighters have. But facing Canelo Alvarez is not like facing fighters like Sean Hemphill and Vladimir Shishkin. Alvarez is in his 20th year as a professional fighter and looks to have recaptured some of that old zip on his punches and counter combinations.

My expectation is for Canelo to wear down on that Scull defense and get the Cuban to try his hand at offense more. Scull may get a few shots in early, which will only inspire Canelo to try and knock out Scull earlier. However, this may take a while. After all, the IBF champion has parlayed his defensive abilities almost to a fault. It will be what lengthens this fight but ends it before 12 rounds as well.
