Katie Taylor Aims to Remain on Her Throne

In an era of countless organizations and new belts seemingly popping up by the day, a champion that has unified all the belts is an anomaly in many ways.

Katie Taylor is the undisputed champion in her division as she carries all the major divisional hardware with her into this weekend’s prizefight.

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist and two-weight world champion Taylor last competed in August when she secured a unanimous decision victory over Delfine Persoon.

She looks to get in one more fight before the calendar year wraps up and takes on an individual who has held the mandatory challenger spot for the last year.

Miriam Gutierrez’s Chance to Shock the World

Miriam Gutierrez captured the interim WBA lightweight world title in her last outing when she bested Keren Batiz via unanimous decision in November 2019.

That being said, Gutierrez’s record is littered with club level fighters who have lopsided losing records. This includes several pugilists who hadn’t scored a single pro win prior to fighting Miriam Gutierrez.

Gutierrez is getting a bit long in the tooth as well being 37 years old and facing a 34-year-old champion in the prime of her run.

Both are unbeaten heading into this weekend but someone’s 0 has got to go.

Main Card Picks for Taylor vs Gutierrez

  1. Terri Harper vs Katharina Thanderz: The WBC and IBO super featherweight world titles will be up for grabs between Harper and Thanderz. Terri Harper enters this bout as the champion on the heels of a draw against Natasha Jonas while Thanderz is undefeated and in the contender role. Odds on Harper winning via decision are at -250, and I see that as being the likeliest outcome. Pick: Terri Harper (-575)
  2. Rachel Ball vs Jorgelina Guanini: The vacant WBA bantamweight world title will go to the winner of this slugfest. In Ball’s 6 wins as a professional, she has not scored a single stoppage. Also, odds on Ball winning via decision are at -140. I think Rachel Ball captures the vacant belt and wins on points. Pick: Rachel Ball (-280)
  3. Thomas Whittaker Hart vs Jermaine Springer: Springer has double the pro experience of his opponent but I’d say Whittaker Hart has faced stiffer tests across his unbeaten run. The odds on Thomas Whittaker Hart winning via decision is at +185, and I see that as how he wins this bout. Pick: Thomas Whittaker Hart (-800)
  4. John Docherty vs Jack Cullen: Docherty has close to an eighty percent knockout rate. Odds on Docherty winning by KO, TKO, or DQ are situated at -190 for good reason. Also, Docherty winning in round 7 is at +850, which is when I see John Docherty putting his opponent away. Pick: John Docherty (-600)
