The youngest male world champion takes center stage on July 4 when Abdullah Mason (20-0) returns to his native Cleveland to defend the WBO lightweight title against Albert Bell (28-0).

Mason was initially scheduled to attempt his first title defense against the WBO No. 1-ranked contender, Joe Cordina. However, the Welsh former transfer was unable to obtain a visa due to his scheduled court date regarding an ongoing assault charge. In stepped the undefeated Bell, who also hails from Ohio and had been booked to face Andy Cruz on July 18.

Although not teammates, Mason and Bell are former sparring partners, creating a sense of familiarity between them. Mason is sharing the card with two of his brothers, Ibrahim and Abdurrahman, who are both competing on the undercard.

The two champions atop the card, Abdullah Mason and Bruce Carrington, are both sizeable favorites to notch their first title defenses and maintain status atop their respective divisions. Mason is the shortest betting favorite on the main card, but he is still -550 to retain the title, giving him an implied win probability of 84.6 percent.

Undefeated 23-year-old Deric ‘Scooter’ Davis is the biggest favorite on the main card at -2500. Davis, 11-0, is facing the biggest test of his career against 23-fight veteran Carlos Ramos, yet he is still near-unanimously expected to kick off the night with a massive victory.

Abdullah Mason vs. Albert Bell Prediction

After spending all camp preparing for Cordina, Mason draws a completely different style matchup in Bell. Fortunately for the champion, it is one that he naturally matches up very well with.

The biggest issue many fighters deal with against Bell is his size, with the six-foot-tall lightweight towering over most other 135-pounders. That will ring true once again against the 5-foot-9 Mason, giving the challenger a three-inch height advantage.

However, Mason’s reach will actually be one inch longer than that of Bell. As the much faster puncher with a substantially better jab, Mason will be the fighter dictating the pace and range from the outside, even as the shorter man in the ring. Bell does not like when his opponents can work around his frame.

Mason’s constantly improving footwork will also be a key difference-maker against Bell, who stands straight up to maximize every inch of his height. Without much of a power threat — Bell has just nine knockouts in his 28 career victories — the challenger does not have enough in his shallow tool bag to win an outside battle against Mason.

Mason might take a few rounds to find his rhythm against Bell’s frame, but he is the better boxer in virtually every category. Bell leaves himself open whenever he throws more than one punch at a time, giving Mason the opening he needs to close the show once the 33-year-old starts getting more desperate.

Bruce Carrington vs. Rene Palacios Prediction

Despite just claiming the WBC featherweight title in January, Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington is already being pushed to boxing stardom by multiple entities in the sport. His first title defense against Rene Palacios is another step toward that goal.

Carrington is undefeated, but he is far from invincible. ‘Shu Shu’ is coming off a massive knockout of Carlos Castro in his title-clinching performance that had everyone buzzing at the beginning of the year. But while the finish padded his highlight reel, Carrington raised a few red flags in the back-and-forth fight that exposed a few holes in his game.

Carrington’s aggressive style could lead to problems down the line, but Palacios is unlikely to be the fighter to expose them. The 25-year-old challenger fights with a lot of grit and a defensively sound game plan that has led him to his first world title fight. However, he lacks the offensive arsenal to threaten Carrington.

Palacios has made a career out of grinding out wins by dragging fights into the mud. That style will keep Carrington on his toes, but ‘Shu Shu’ has always been adept at fighting off his back foot and maximizing his lanky frame. The champion enters this fight with a five-inch reach advantage that will pay dividends throughout the fight.

After fighting a punching bag like Castro, Carrington now faces a defensively disciplined fighter in Palacios, whose chin has kept him off the canvas through his first 20 fights. Carrington is being booked well to look like a star and notch his first title defense with a dominant 12-round decision.

Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson vs. Christopher Guerrero Prediction

  • Tiger Johnson by decision (-138 on Bet365)

In the final non-title fight of the night, former Olympian Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson also returns to his hometown, where he welcomes fellow undefeated welterweight prospect, Christopher Guerrero. The clash of styles gives each fighter a unique path to victory, but the matchup gives Johnson the higher ground.

As with most fighters with decorated amateur careers, Johnson fights behind by-the-book fundamentals — elite footwork, a potent jab and a disciplined guard. The main criticism of Johnson throughout his career has been his tendency to stall at times, which he has improved in recent performances.

Guerrero is almost the exact opposite of Johnson. The 25-year-old is a classic pressure fighter who craves a war of attrition, believing his chin and power will always reign supreme. So far, Guerrero’s style has broken down nearly every opponent, albeit against subpar competition.

As a pressure-based fighter, Guerrero has the style to wear on a patient boxer like Johnson if ‘Tiger’ comes in unprepared. But in addition to showing constant improvement each time out, Johnson has now aligned with renowned trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre to improve his footwork and offensive versatility. McIntyre has developed the elite footwork of Terence Crawford, Keyshawn Davis and Lester Martinez, among others.

An even more fine-tuned version of Johnson poses multiple problems that Guerrero has yet to encounter. Johnson already has the footwork to frustrate a forward-moving brawler like Guerrero, and he has become a superb counter-puncher in the last two years. If the American can sustain a disciplined game plan for all 10 rounds, he has all the tools to make Saturday night a long one for Guerrero.
