- Garcia vs Vargas goes Saturday, February 29th at 11:00 pm EST
- Can Garcia get back into the win column or will Vargas extend his unbeaten streak which dates back to November 2016?
- Check out the odds for this prizefight, the sweet science breakdown, and my prediction below
Garcia vs Vargas emanates from The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The WBC diamond welterweight belt is the prize up for grabs in this prizefight. It’s a high stakes bout at 147 lbs that will inform the world title picture throughout 2020 in a big way. Though Garcia tasted his first defeat as a pro in his last outing, he still is a fringe top ten pound for pound caliber of fighter. He looks to validate that notion in a high-pressure situation opposite the capably violent world-beater Jessie Vargas.
Garcia vs Vargas Odds
Fighter | Odds |
---|---|
Mikey Garcia | -600 |
Jessie Vargas | +400 |
Odds taken Feb. 25th
Garcia has been a four-division world champion and is one of many pound for pound level pugilists on the card. Garcia’s initial foray into the welterweight elite did not exactly pan out well. That being said, he lost to pound for pound phenom Errole Spencer Jr who stifled him time and again en route to a unanimous decision.
This was the first pro defeat of Garcia’s career and he has had a fire lit under him from this lone blemish on the record. Vargas is no slouch either in terms of multi-division accomplishments.
Welterweight WarfareÂ
Jessie Vargas has held championships in two different divisions and has held belts from the IBO, WBO, and WBA. Though Vargas won by KO over Humberto Soto in round six of his last fight, he’s still looking to gain more consistency with a record of 2-1-2 in his last five. Garcia is now being represented by Eddie Hearn, seems to have made the necessary readjustments, and looks to carry his vicious KO power to the welterweight ranks.

Garcia normally has plied his trade at 135 lbs and valiantly jumped up two weight divisions for his last title bid. It will be interesting to see how different he looks in his sophomore effort at 147 lbs. Jessie Vargas has more experience in this division and has been a welterweight for the last five years.
Vargas has a five-inch height advantage as well as a three-inch reach advantage. Also, the only defeats that Vargas has suffered as a pro are to well-regarded world champion fighters in Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley.
Garcia vs Vargas Tale of the Tape
39-1 | Record | 29-2-2 |
30 | Knockouts | 11 |
5’6 | Height | 5’11 |
68″ | Reach | 71″ |
Adrien Broner, Roman Martinez, Robert Easter Jr | Significant Wins | Sadam Ali, Anton Novikov, Khabib Allakhverdiev |
Orthodox | Stance | Orthodox |
On Saturday night, one more man gets to add his name to that vaunted list. I don’t see Garcia having back to back losses on his record after this weekend wraps up. I think Mikey Garcia will secure a unanimous decision victory when Garcia vs Vargas takes place.
Pick: Mikey Garcia (-600)
