Opening odds for Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley have rolled out as hype ramps up regarding the contest. Many had questions on Paul’s next opponent, Woodley’s name was in the conversation, and now the wheels are in motion.

A boxing bout looks to transpire between a 3-0 pro/controversial Youtube star and a former UFC champion debuting in the sweet science. It all goes down a day before your boy’s birthday.

Jake Paul recently announced a multi-fight deal with Showtime. The timing of this announcement coincides well with brother Logan Paul’s upcoming Sunday bout on Showtime. A boxing exhibition against former multi-division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

A location has not been revealed as of yet. But there will purportedly be a faceoff this Friday in Miami between the two to promote the bout.

Paul is being favored here early due to the recency bias of his Triller Fight club win in April and the fact that the 3-0 boxer will be taking on his fourth straight debutant opponent.

How Did We Get to Paul vs Woodley?

The intrigue that existed around Jake Paul’s fight with Ben Askren was the level of parity there was. Ben Askren has one of the worst stand-up games a high-level MMA fighter has ever showcased.

Askren was an elite wrestler and someone that never secured meaningful knockdowns or knockouts from a standing position. But the same cannot be said for Tyron Woodley heading into this permutation of Paul pugilism.

Tyron Woodley has scored emphatic highlight reel KOs in MMA utilizing his hands. Including his remarkable stoppage of Robbie Lawler to capture the welterweight title; this against a guy that was the boogeyman of 170 pounds at the time.

Paul will have the size advantage here as he competes at 190 pounds, and Woodley has carved his career out as a 170 pounder.

Despite the similar wrestling roots, I think Woodley will be able to adjust to competing in the big gloves far more fluidly than Askren was able to.

The Ben Askren Connection

The name Ben Askren is closely tied in here as he and Tyron Woodley are long-time friends and teammates. A partnership started in their amateur wrestling days at Mizzou extended all through their respective MMA careers, and it’s one that continues to this day.

Woodley was cornering Askren for the Paul fight, and there was a fair bit of backstage jaw-jacking that made the rounds on social media thereafter.

There are a ton of compelling storyline elements here. There is also a reasonable level of pugilistic parity. That being said, this is undoubtedly the stiffest test Jake Paul has faced as of yet in his combative career.

As far as how the odds will move closer to the fight, I think there will be some underdog money coming in on Woodley.

Despite his recent setbacks, this is still a guy who held a UFC world championship. Someone who has showcased a proven ability to finish with his hands.

I think Paul’s localized boxing experience should preserve him as the favorite. But the line will get fairly close as the prizefight draws near.
