The next couple of days are offering up some great boxing bouts for fans of the sweet science to enjoy.

Roman Gonzalez’s Path to Retain

Roman Gonzalez has held championship gold at light flyweight and flyweight, capturing world titles at 108 and 112 pounds before jumping up for another championship campaign at super flyweight.

It wasn’t too long ago that Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez was at a career crossroad’s moment following a pair of defeats to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2017.

Gonzalez took ample time off between fights (anywhere between a year and fifteen months sometimes), compiling a three-fight win streak that led him to capture the WBA super-flyweight world title against Khalid Yafai via ninth-round TKO in February.

Israel Gonzalez is riding back to back victories heading into his first fight of 2020. His last outing saw him defeat Sho Ishida via split decision in their twelve round bout last December.

Israel Gonzalez’s Quest to Become New Champion

Israel Gonzalez is ranked at #4 by the WBA heading into this title bid.

He has fallen short in two prior bids for world super flyweight championships (A TKO loss to Jerwin Ancajas for the IBF belt and a decision defeat to the aforementioned Khalid Yafai for the WBA belt) and is undoubtedly hoping third time’s the charm this weekend.

Jiga Gonzalez has a stiff test in front of him in the form of Chocolatito Gonzalez who has long been hailed as a pound for pound great.

This is a key fight for the 115-pound hierarchy going forward into the new year. The winner of the WBC title bout on this same card between Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras will face the victor of Gonzalez against Gonzalez during the early part of 2021.

Israel Gonzalez will look to use his size advantage and ability to use his physical frame while gauging range. Conversely, Roman Gonazlez will look to work a volume punching approach to overwhelm his adversary.

Roman Gonzalez has an 84 percent knockout rate compared to the sub-fifty percent stoppage rate of Israel Gonzalez.

This one is scheduled for twelve rounds, but I don’t think that it goes the distance. Roman Gonzalez scores the stoppage victory and halts Israel Gonzalez inside of nine rounds.

Pick: Roman Gonzalez (-1800)

Main Card Picks for Gonzalez vs Gonzalez

  1. Juan Francisco Estrada vs Carlos Cuadras: As was mentioned, the WBC world super flyweight championship will be contested here. This bout is a rematch from 2017 which Estrada won by a closely contested decision.  I foresee Cuadras getting the win and evening up the series at a single win apiece. Pick: Carlos Cuadras (+425)
  2. Julio Cesar Martinez vs Moises Calleros: This contest is for the WBC world flyweight championship. Martinez is aiming to make the third defense of his crown here. I think Martinez secures the stoppage victory inside of eight rounds. Pick: Julio Cesar Martinez (-2500)
