Boise State (22-7, 12-4 Mountain West) had a four-game winning streak broken in a 74-68 overtime loss at San Jose State on Saturday, removing some of the drama from a game that could have determined the MWC title.

Boise State is 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in the last four, and won all three games against the Aztecs a year ago, including a 53-52 win in the championship game of the Mountain West tournament. San Diego State Plays for First
The Aztecs can clinch their third Mountain West regular-season championship in four years with a victory here or home against Wyoming in the season-finale Saturday thanks to Lamont Butler’s buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 73-71 victory at New Mexico the last time out. The plan was for Butler to dribble hard to the basket, but this worked out, too.

San Diego State relies on defense and balanced scoring while winning 10 of its last 11, the only loss 75-66 at Nevada, which is tied for Boise State for second place in the league. Go-to big guard Matt. Bradley (13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds) and point guard Darrion Trammell (10.2 points, 3.7 assists) are the only players averaging in double figures scoring, but four others score between 7.4 and 9.0 points. Eight different players have led the scoring at least once. Senior post Nathan Mensah (6.9 points, a team-high 6.0 rebounds had 17/6 in the first meeting.
The Aztecs are holding opponents to 42.4 percent shooting from the field, although they do not play the same smothering defense that held opponents under 40 percent from the field and ranked in the top 12 in Division in each of the last three seasons.
Boise State Looks For Revenge
The Broncos played without senior guard Marcus Shaver in the first meeting, when the Aztecs rolled to a 72-52 victory at Viejas Arena. Difference-maker Shaver (13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists) missed that game with an right ankle injury, one of five games he has missed this season and one of several others that he played at less than full strength. Shaver leads the Broncos in rebounds and assists, and they are 18-3 when he starts and 4-4 when he doesn’t. Boise gave up the final five points in regulation in a 74-68 loss at San Jose State on Saturday.
Ridiculous stretch by Marcus Shaver:
—Game-winning 3-pointer at Utah State with 0:02 left (Jan. 20)
—Go-ahead 3-pointer at San Diego State with 0:30 left (Jan. 22)
—Game-tying 3-pointer at Fresno State with 0:01 left (tonight)

Guards Shaver and 6’5″ Max Rice (14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 61 threes) are the primary go-to guys in crunch time, and the balanced Broncos get contributions inside from 6’7″ forwards Tyson Degenhart (14.3, 5.4), Chibuzo Agbo (11.5, 4.8, 56 threes) and Nate Smith (9.9, 5.6). Rice, son of coach Leon Rice, had a career-high 30 points with five three-pointers in an 82-77 home victory over New Mexico on Wednesday.
The Broncos contest shots. They are limiting opponents to 40.5 percent shooting, 29.9 percent from three-point range.
San Diego State vs Boise State Prediction
Both these teams are safely in the NCAA field of 68 at this point, although Boise State is in a much more precarious position. The Broncos finish the regular-season at Utah State, which is on the wrong side of the bubble now, and losses in the final two games of the regular-season would jeopardize everything. San Diego State had revenge on its mind in the first meeting this season after losing all three games last year. This time, a vengeful Boise State group with a full complement is the play.
