Thursday Night Football – college version – pits Virginia Tech (3-3, 3-3 ATS) against Boston College (4-2, 3-3 ATS) for the seventh time. The schools are tied at three wins apiece when they play on Thursday.

Formerly Big East rivals, the Hokies and Eagles are now in the ACC. The Hokies are getting some love from the oddsmakers as a touchdown favorite with the over/under line at 48.5.

Here’s what you need to know for this Thursday Night clash.

Boston College vs Virginia Tech odds

Teams Spread Moneyline Total
Boston College +7.5 (-110) +240 O  48.5 (-110)
Virginia Tech -7.5 (+110) -303 U 48.5 (-110)

The line has moved up some in favor of the homestanding Hokies. They were 6.5-point favorites early in the week. FanDuel had the total as high as 50.5 at one point, but it’s now locked in at 48.5 at most sportsbooks.

Virginia Tech is 4-2 this season over/under, while the Eagles are 1-5. The best moneyline bet on BC is at Caesars where its +240. The best Virginia Tech moneyline best bet is -275 at BetMGM.

Sackmasters On The Hunt

The game features two of the top sack leaders in all of college football with Boston College defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku posting nine, which is second in the country and Virginia Tech beast Antwaun Powell-Ryland with seven.

The Hokies rank fifth in the nation as a team with 21 sacks this season.

It will be a challenge for both defenses, because both teams feature quarterbacks who can move. Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones has run for 278 yards, while Eagles starter Thomas Castellanos has run for 103.

Ground and Pound and Turbo?

Neither of these two teams are lighting up the scoreboard. These are run-the-ball, defense-first teams.

Tech leans hard on running back Bhayshul Tuten who has 605 yards this season and nine touchdowns. He ranks 18th in the nation in yards. He is averaging 5.6 yards a carry.

Boston College first-year coach Bill O’Brien uses three different running backs: Kye Robichaux, Treshaun Ward and freshman Turbo Richard. That’s right, “Turbo.” He acquired that nickname when he was nine when he kept winning races at football practice.

This is a strength vs. strength match-up. Boston College has one of the best run defenses in the country, and is only allowing 17.2 points a game. Virginia Tech will want to run the ball with Tuten. Whether they can will be the big factor.

Virginia Tech’s defense has struggled against the run, allowing over 170 yards on the ground. Could we get more Turbo for Boston College? Castellanos also has the ability to make plays when things break down. Drones was expected to take a big step for Virginia Tech this season, but hasn’t developed as quickly as Hokie fans would like.

Neither team has a lot of confidence in their passing game. The Hokies are averaging under 200 yards passing, so are the Eagles.

It was big news this week that BC lost top cornerback Amari Jackson with a torn ACL for the season, but the Hokies don’t look like the type of offense that can take advantage.

Even though the bulk of the games between these two teams haven’t been close, we think O’Brien will have a conservative game plan and try to keep the game within a touchdown and hope to steal it late. The last time BC had a game in the national spotlight, they beat up on Florida State. We like O’Brien to have his team ready to go.
