  • Get my early San Jose State vs USC prediction on a line that has climbed near 40 points
  • The betting line leaves nothing on the moneyline, so the value sits in two other markets
  • Read below for my full breakdown, my three picks, and a favorite player prop

USC and San Jose State both open the 2026 college football season at 0-0. The Trojans are a heavy home favorite at the Coliseum, with the Spartans making the trip as a big road underdog.

USC has won all six previous meetings, every one at the Coliseum, and every one by double digits. That history is baked into a number this size.

Below I break down my San Jose State vs USC prediction, the matchup that shapes the game script, and where the betting line offers real value in Week 0.

San Jose State vs USC Prediction

  • Score prediction: USC 56, San Jose State 10.

USC averaged 465.5 total yards and 35.0 points last season, converted 51.3% of its third downs, and scored on 90.3% of its red zone trips. Jayden Maiava led the nation with a 91.2 QBR and threw for a Big Ten-best 3,711 yards.

The bigger key is what happens when San Jose State has the ball. The Spartans throw more than anyone in the country, passing on 63.4% of their snaps since 2024 with 41.7 attempts per game.

That works until someone gets home. Quarterback Luke Weaver completed 43.8% of his throws under pressure last season with no touchdowns and a 69.6 rating, against 62.9% and a 133.1 rating from a clean pocket. USC recorded 31 sacks.

San Jose State also gave the ball away 27 times last year for a minus-14 turnover differential, and it is rebuilding with 48 new players. Only three projected starters made six or more starts in 2025.

My San Jose State vs USC prediction is that the Trojans jump on this early. Lincoln Riley is 9-0 in season openers, and USC has averaged 44.8 points in openers since 2017.

San Jose State vs USC Picks & Best Bets

  • USC -38.5 (-107): Laying nearly 40 is never comfortable, but all six meetings in this series were double-digit wins. The turnover gap and red zone edge point the same way.
  • Over 60.5 (-110): USC has averaged 502.7 yards in openers since 2017 and scored 20-plus in 43 straight home games. A pass-first underdog trailing early only speeds the game up.
  • Jayden Maiava Over 2.5 Passing TDs (-132): He threw 24 touchdowns in 13 games behind a line that allowed one sack per game. The risk is the blowout itself, since he may not see the fourth quarter.

San Jose State vs USC Betting Line

Line as of August 25, 2026, at 8:28 PM ET from top bookmakers. Shop the number at the best college football betting apps.

Strip out the vig and USC comes out with a 98.08% chance to win outright, which is why the moneyline is unplayable in either direction. Polymarket prices the same game as a percentage if you would rather see it that way.

A $10 bet on San Jose State at +5000 would return $500 in profit, and the history explains the price. All the real action sits on the spread and the 60.5-point total.

San Jose State vs USC Betting Splits

Where the money lands compared to the ticket count tells you more than either number alone. Stake percentage filters out the noise from small public bets.

The moneyline is the strange one. USC holds 96.73% of the tickets, but 81.64% of the money sits on San Jose State at +5000. A few bettors are taking a swing at the long price.

The spread is more useful. San Jose State has 93.72% of tickets on +38.5, yet USC holds 47.91% of the stake on under 7% of them. That is a small group of large bets on the favorite, and it is why I am laying the points.

The total looks similar but softer. The Under has 92.12% of tickets while the Over holds 45.64% of the money, so the average Over bet is much larger. Track the rest on our college football betting trends page.
