The nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards are out, and they came with their fair share of surprises. Leading the way with three nominations was American drama Trumbo, with nods for Bryan Cranston and Best Ensemble Cast. Sleepers Straight Outta Compton and Beasts of No Nation were also singled out with Best Ensemble nods.
Dame Helen Mirren’s still got it! The talented British actress is a double nominee this year with a Best Actress nomination for her leading role in Woman in Gold, along with a nomination for her supporting role as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper in Trumbo. No love for Hollywood darling Jennifer Lawrence, however, as the Hunger Games star was surprisingly absent from the Best Actress category despite a rousing performance in Joy.
As for television, streaming service Netflix earned more nominations (eight) than any of the networks. Not to be outdone, HBO is up for six awards for Game of Thrones and Veep, respectively.
As expected, there were some surprise snubs from the SAG-AFTRA membership. Neither Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful Eight nor David O. Russell’s Joy received any recognition from the guild. Also overlooked in the acting categories were Sylvester Stallone in Creed, Matt Damon in The Martian, Michael Keaton in Spotlight, and Will Smith in Concussion.
TV actors weren’t immune to the cold shoulder. Everyone on Fox’s hit drama Empire was passed up, as was the cast of FX’s crime drama Fargo. Despite receiving ten Emmy nods, American Crime was also brushed off.
Can’t wait until January 30th to find out the list of winners? We’ve got an early look at the odds for all the major categories.
