Activist and actress Cynthia Nixon has officially thrown her hat into the political ring, announcing her candidacy for Governor of New York this past Monday.

For those who know Nixon best as Miranda Hobbes from Sex and the City, this may seem a strange turn of character. However, Nixon is a long-time political advocate in the state of New York. She has served on Mayor Bill de Blasio’s advisory board for the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, taken part in the “People’s State of the Union” (held this past January as an alternative event to Pres. Trump’s first State of the Union speech), and was recently honored with the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award for her advocacy on marriage equality.

In a January op-ed piece for CNN, Nixon pointed to the first year of Trump’s presidency as impetus for the American people to “go out and seize” change, leading to much speculation about her own potential bid. And it is the people on whom Nixon is relying for support. According to her official campaign site, “Cynthia hasn’t been bought and paid for by corporate interests, and won’t be accepting any corporate contributions in this campaign.”

Nixon will run against current Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary this September. The official announcement came via Nixon’s Twitter account.

2018 New York Primary Odds

Who will win 2018 NY Governor Democratic primary Odds
Gov. Andrew Cuomo 2/3
Cynthia Nixon 5/1
FIELD 7/2

According to the Siena College poll, Gov. Cuomo is up on Nixon 66% to 19% among New York Democrats. Though voters are split on whether or not they want Cuomo back for a third term, 52% of New Yorkers still maintain a positive view of the governor. Nixon, on the other hand, starts her electoral race with 60% of general New Yorkers claiming they have “no opinion” on her.

There are still months to go before the primary is held in September, however, and that means months for Nixon to showcase her political prowess. With some high-profile names already voicing their support, such as Rosie O’Donnell and her SATC co-star Kristen Davis, Nixon’s name may yet gain some familiarity with her possible constituents.

Still, if you’re relying on the people to fund your campaign and vote you into office, you have to be known amongst the people. Fighting to win over that 60% “no opinion” crowd may be more of an uphill battle than Team Nixon is prepared for.

Trump vs Nixon Odds

Will President Trump call Cynthia Nixon out on Twitter?  Odds
 YES 2/3
 NO  3/2

To say the President is fond of Twitter would be a vast understatement. We, the people, have the distinct privilege — or burden, depending on who you ask — of knowing his inner-most thoughts, and as such, know full well how little he thinks of people who disagree with him.

Should Nixon’s campaign really gain traction, Pres. Trump may enlighten us with his opinion on this one, as well, especially considering she has already stated that his election served as the catalyst for her own political moves.

Trump vs Rosie O’Donnell Odds

Will Pres. Trump and Rosie O’Donnell reignite their Twitter feud?  Odds
YES 2/5
 NO 5/2

Remember when former talk show host Rosie O’Donnell got into a a full online war with President Trump? Tensions have been high between the two for more than a decade, since O’Donnell first criticized the businessman while co-host on The ViewRosie was selling her original anti-Trump artwork, and show zero signs of slowing. Just this past February, , with all proceeds going to various “anti-Trump” causes.

But, what relevance does their distaste for one another have with Cynthia Nixon’s gubernatorial campaign? Well, O’Donnell has been vocal about her support for Nixon, a long-time friend who happens to share similar misgivings about the POTUS.

Which SATC star will run for office next? Odds
 Sarah Jessica Parker 3/1
 Kristen Davis  7/1
Willie Garson 9/1
Kim Cattrall  20/1

Carrie may never have voted in a New York election, but Sarah Jessica Parker makes no bones about the fact that she and her character could not be more different. Another New York city native, Parker is the next-best bet to make a run at a career in office.
