The PGA Tour returns to Michigan for the first time in over a decade with the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic from Detroit Golf Club.

The field isn’t as deep as other events, though it does have some star power with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and reigning US Open champ Gary Woodland competing for the first time since his victory at Pebble Beach.

Dustin Johnson the Overwhelming Favorite for a Reason

Normally betting on the favorite to win a tournament leads to heartache when someone like Chez Reavie last week takes the title at 50-1 odds. However, with no course history to draw upon this week, DJ is the clear choice.

Just six other golfers in the top 25 of the FedEx Cup point standings are teeing it up this week, allowing Dustin Johnson a tremendous opportunity to take control of the event against a pretty weak field.

While there isn’t a ton of value at +600 on DJ, bank on him to add to his 20 career PGA Tour victories this week.

Time to Jump Aboard the Joaquin Niemann Bandwagon

After a surprisingly slow start to his first full season on the PGA Tour, 20-year old Chilean phenom Joaquin Niemann showed signs of life at last week’s Travelers Championship, where he tied for fifth.

This could be the week for his breakthrough on the PGA Tour, and at +4000, his odds are extremely enticing. Prior to that strong finish in Hartford, Niemann had been showing signs of turning the corner in the last month.

Joaquin Niemann’s Last 4 Tournaments

Tournament Result
Travelers Championship T-5th
RBC Canadian Open T-31st
The Memorial Tournament T-27th
Charles Schwab Challenge T-31st

You may not get these juicy of odds again should Niemann post another fantastic tournament this week in Detroit, so gambling on him this week is definitely worthwhile.

2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic Best Value Picks

  1. Billy Horschel (+3300): Only one missed cut in 20 events this season. Been inside the top-25 in four of his last five events.
  2. Kevin Tway (+5000): Winner earlier in the season at the Safeway Open, another weaker field event. Finished T-5th last week at Travelers Championship. No missed cuts since April.
  3. Chesson Hadley (+11000): Had a phenomenal showing at US Open two weeks ago, where he was T-9th. Also was runner-up at CIMB Classic earlier in the season. Propensity to miss quite a few cuts has him at these odds, thus making him boom or bust.
