  • The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship tees off Thursday September 24th
  • This third year PGA Tour event has a wide open field with many of the world’s best skipping it after the US Open
  • We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious and provided the best value bets below

It was always going to be a natural letdown for the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship field coming off the US Open last weekend, and unfortunately that is the case this week.

Nearly all of the big names have opted not to tee it up, meaning this tournament is completely wide open and susceptible to a surprise champion.

This is just the third year the PGA Tour is headed to this track, but the course hosted a Korn Ferry Tour event the two years prior to that as well. Last time this tournament was contested, major champion Graeme McDowell outlasted the field for his fourth PGA Tour title.

Mackenzie Hughes Fresh off Tour Championship

The only player to make it all the way to East Lake for the 30-player Tour Championship field playing this week is Canadian Mackenzie Hughes. He enters this tournament at +2000 odds which is pretty good considering he’s tied for the fourth favorite to win outright.

Hughes put together some really strong performances in the 2020 season, with a runner-up at Honda, a T-3rd at the Travelers Championship plus two strong tournaments in the playoffs in order to reach the Tour Championship, including a clutch short putt at the BMW Championship just to qualify for East Lake.

At this very event last year, Hughes finished in a tie for second, so it’s hard to find much better value for a player with some strong recent performances plus success on this track. He’s gained strokes on the greens in thirteen straight events which bodes well for an event where you need to go low in order to contend.

Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship Best Value Picks

  1. Henrik Stenson (+3300): He hasn’t played much golf since the tour came back in June, teeing it up three times. He’s missed two cuts at the majors and placed T-35 at a WGC event, but in a very weak field against inferior players, Stenson should always be looked at closely at these odds. Gained strokes approaching the green in 14 of last 15 tournaments.
  2. James Hahn (+6600): In his last tournament, the two-time PGA Tour winner was the co-leader after 54 holes at the Safeway Open, before finishing in a tie for ninth. Tee-to-green play and putting were strengths for him in Napa, gaining four strokes on the field in both categories.
  3. Akshay Bhatia (+12500): After struggling to find his footing since turning pro at such a young age, the 18-year-old phenom finished T-9th at the Safeway Open, becoming the youngest player to post a top-10 in a tour event since Justin Rose’s T-4th at the 1998 Open Championship. Gained over five and a half shots on the field in that tournament.
