  • The Northern Trust from TPC Boston tees off August 20th-23rd
  • This is the first leg of the three-part FedEx Cup Playoffs for the coveted $15 million dollar prize
  • We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious and provided the best value bets below

All the big names converge in Boston, Massachusetts for the first leg of the three part FedEx Cup Playoffs with serious cash and bragging rights on the line. Last year, Patrick Reed kicked off the playoffs with a victory at the Northern Trust (at Liberty National Golf Club), but he wasn’t able to capture the FedEx Cup and $15 million carrot at the end, with Rory McIlroy being crowned champion.

This time around, Justin Thomas heads into the postseason leading the FedEx Cup race, and he’ll be in search for his season leading fourth victory with only Bryson DeChambeau favored over him.

TPC Boston used to host a playoff event every year, but it last saw the game’s best tee it up in 2018, when DeChambeau took home the Dell Technologies Championship. The top 70 on the FedEx Cup points list after this tournament will advance to next week’s BMW Championship.

Favorite DeChambeau Last to Win at This Course

Long before he was beefed up and smashing rockets off the tee, Bryson DeChambeau was casually winning the first two playoff events of the 2018 season, including this course at the Dell Technologies Championship and the following week at this tournament, when it was played at Rigdewood Country Club in New Jersey.

Fresh off his T-4th showing at the PGA Championship, he’s the +1100 favorite this week.

Before immediately rushing to wager on him, consider that although he’s racked up a phenomenal eight top ten finishes in his last ten tournaments, he’s only converted one of them into victory. That remains his lone victory since November of 2018.

When he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic last month, most of the big names opted not to tee it up.

Betting Bryson outright at +1100 is far from a sure thing with this stacked field. I’d be much more comfortable placing a bet on a top five finish.

The Northern Trust Best Value Picks

  1. Patrick Reed (+2200): All the two-time Northern Trust champion does is win big events. The last six of his eight tour wins have been in elite tournaments. Has had three strong showings at TPC Boston, with T-4, T-5, T-6 from 2015-17. Has three top-13 finishes in last four times competing.
  2. Tiger Woods (+4500): Insists he’s close to contending again despite a pair of middling results since the came back at the Memorial Tournament and PGA Championship. Has had a wonderful record around this track, with a win in 2006, two runner-ups and a third place showing.
  3. Si Woo Kim (+9000): Deep dive with big upside. Led the Wyndham Championship after 54 holes last weekend before finishing T-3rd, his eight straight cut made. Gained a whopping 8.7 shots on the field tee-to-green at the PGA Championship and 9.9 shots in that same category at the Wyndham.
