  • The Rocket Mortgage Classic from Detroit Golf Club tees off Thursday, July 1st
  • Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is the heavy +750 favorite over Patrick Reed

One week after the thrilling eight-hole playoff won by Harris English at the Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour heads to Detroit, Michigan for the third ever installment of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

In the first two years of this event, unheralded Nate Lashley won for the first time as the last man in the field in 2019, then last year Bryson DeChambeau claimed the title. Going low is paramount for success at this easy track, as Lashley and DeChambeau won with scores of -25, and -23, respectively. Just five players in the top-25 of the world rankings are teeing it up.

This is the second last tournament remaining before the final major championship of 2021 tees off at the Open Championship. The winner in Detroit will take home a cool $1.35 million dollars.

Kevin Kisner Searching for Fourth Win

2021 hasn’t been a season to write home about, but Kevin Kisner came out of hibernation at last weekend’s Travelers Championship, closing with a Sunday 63 to finish tied for fifth.

He enters this championship with a great deal of confidence at this track, as he’s made the cut both times, highlighted by a third place showing last year. Subsequently, Kisner has displayed solid strokes gained stats at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Ball Striking Total Tee-to-Green Approach Putting

Putting has always been his calling card, as he ranks 14th in that category on the campaign. In his last twelve rounds he’s been even better, slotting in third over that time frame. That’ll be crucial for success at this course, given the need to shoot super low scores to be able to contend.

His +3500 odds to win outright aren’t super enticing, but you can say that about anyone’s odds competing this week, with it being such a watered down field. Given his recent strong finish and his great showing at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last year, he’s someone to keep an eye on this week.

2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic Best Value Picks

  1. Doc Redman (+5500): Doc Redman has been knocking on the door for his first victory, as he finished in a tie for second two starts ago at the Palmetto Championship. He also was solo second here in 2019. In the two years at this tournament, Redman is third in total strokes gained, ninth in putting and tenth in SG: tee-to-green. In last twelve rounds this season, he’s seventh in strokes gained with his approach shots.
  2. Kyle Stanley (+9000): Kyle Stanley has made six straight cuts, with a T-8 showing at the Colonial his best result. In the last twelve rounds, he’s first in ball striking and approach shots. The issue has been his putter, but if he can get that straightened out, he could pop against a weak field. Had a respectable T-21 showing at this venue in 2019.
  3. Beau Hossler (+14000): Beau Hossler represents a great long shot with boom potential. After a rather inauspicious season, he’s been solid the last two tournaments, finishing T-19 and T-10. For those eight rounds, he’s first in total strokes gained, second tee-to-green and fourth in ball striking.
