After the United States ten-point thrashing of the Europeans at the Ryder Cup, the next tournament on the schedule is the Sanderson Farms Championship. This marks the second event of the new wraparound 2021-22 season, with Max Homa having captured the Fortinet Championship.

The only golfer from either side of the 43rd Ryder Cup making the trip to the Country Club of Jackson is defending champion Sergio Garcia. Last season, the Spaniard ended a three-year winless drought on the PGA Tour with a closing birdie on the 72nd hole to wrestle the title away from Peter Malnati. Despite the Euros getting trounced 19-9, Sergio was solid, posting a 3-1 record for the week.

Garcia’s triumph last season ended a six-year run of first time winners at this championship. Going low is imperative for success at this track, as the winner has shot at least 16-under all seven times this course has hosted this tournament.

Mito Pereira Poised For Breakthrough Victory

Mito Pereira has quickly made a name for himself in the golfing world, having won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour to earn automatic promotion to the PGA Tour. In short order, he then posted three straight top-six finishes, including a T-4 at the Olympics, where he lost a supersized playoff for the bronze medal.

The 26-year-old Chilean started off the 2021-22 campaign in great fashion, collecting a third place finish at the Fortinet Championship. In his last twelve rounds on the PGA Tour, he’s leading in a pair of ‘strokes gained’ categories of those competing this week.

Should be taste victory, Pereira would continue the trend of first-time champions at this tournament (apart from last season), as he’d be the seventh in the last eight to make this their maiden title. His +2800 odds are very much palatable considering how strong he’s been playing and the fact he’s up against a weaker field.

2021 Sanderson Farms Championship Best Value Picks

  1. Cameron Davis (+3500): Cameron Davis has made nine of his last ten cuts, including picking up his first win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The Aussie was also the 54-hole co-leader at the Sanderson Farms last year, before settling for a sixth place tie. That week he was eighth in putts per green in regulation. In eight of his last ten starts, Davis has gained strokes on the greens compared to his competitors.
  2. Scott Stallings (+6000): Two weeks ago, Scott Stallings was squarely in the mix at the Fortinet Championship before an untimely bogey on the par-5, 9th. He wound up in a tie for sixth after ranking third in strokes gained putting for the week. Last year at the Sanderson Farms, Stallings also was T-6th, where he was fifth in SG: tee-to-green. Past champion (2012) of this event, albeit at a different track.
  3. Peter Malnati (+10000): Peter Malnati is a dart throw with big upside at this track. Last year he shot a closing 63 to nearly claim victory, as he finished second. In 2015, this marked his, to date, lone PGA Tour win. The four years sandwiched between those results produced nothing better than a 34th place showing making Malnati a classic boom or bust pick.
