The PGA Tour’s swing season rolls on this week landing in Jackson, MS, for the Sanderson Farms Championship. As with most fall events, birdies will be made in bunches, with the winning score likely to fall in the -18 to -22 range.

That’s going to put a premium on scoring this week in our sleepers and longshots betting card, and there’s no shortage of attackable holes at the Country Club of Jackson. The track plays just over 7,400 yards as a par 72, and features four gettable par 5’s.

Grillo Ready to Get Back in the Winner’s Circle

The Argentinian won his first start as an official member of the PGA Tour in 2015, and hasn’t tasted victory since. He was mired in a prolonged downswing to start 2022, but he turned things around in the summer.

He finished the 2021-22 season with four straight made cuts stateside, including three top-20’s and a pair of runner-ups. One of those second place finishes was at TPC Twin Cities, which just happens to be an excellent comp course to the one he’s about to play.

Grillo has made the weekend in all three of his appearances at the Sanderson Farms Championship, and appears primed to make a run at the title.

Over the past 24 rounds, he ranks second in this field in birdie-or-better percentage, and fifth in par-5 scoring. He’s also 18th over that time in strokes gained putting, ninth in good drive percentage (a combination of driving distance and accuracy), and top-25 in proximity from 125-150 yards out, one of the most common ranges for approach shots this week.

Pick: Emiliano Grillo to Win (+4000)

Dial Up Detry

We’re going to see a lot more of Thomas Detry this season, after the Belgian earned his Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour finals. Detry has a rock solid game that he polished over in Europe, and has had plenty of success when he’s teed it up in America.

He’s made the cut in every non-major PGA Tour event he’s played, finishing 22nd or better in each of his last six starts. He’s fresh off a 12th place finish in the swing season’s opening event, and is primed for an even better result this week.

Detry ranks top-eight in the field over the past 24 rounds in birdies or better and par-5 scoring. He’s 15th in strokes gained putting over that stretch, and seventh in proximity from 100-125 yards out, which is another key range for approach shots at the Country Club of Jackson.

Pick: Thomas Detry Top-10 (+400)

Sanderson Farms Championship Top-20 Finish Value Picks

  1. Hayden Buckley (+450): Ended the 2021-22 season with seven straight made cuts, and finished top-26 at both TPC Twin Cities and Detroit Golf Club, which profile very similar to this track. He’s 22nd in the field over the past 24 rounds in strokes gained approach, 22nd in putting and sixth in good drive percentage.
  2. Austin Eckroat (+500): If you want to target an extreme longshot that oozes good driving and wedge play, this is your man. Eckroat leads the field in good drive percentage over the past 24 rounds, and ranks inside the top-10 in both key wedge proximity disances (100-125 yards and 125-150 yards). He made the cut in his swing season opener, after finishing second at the Korn Ferry Tour Finals earlier this month.
