There’s an interesting historical symmetry at work as the Houston Astros (8-1, 3-0 away) and Philadelphia Phillies (10-3, 5-0 home) get ready for Game 3 of the World Series.
This is the the third time in Astros history they’ve arrived at Game 3 of the World Series deadlocked 1-1. In 2017, Houston won Game 3 and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. Last season, the Astros lost Game 3 and fell in six games to the Atlanta Braves.
It’s the sixth time the Phillies have been 1-1 in World Series play. In 2008, they won Game 3 from the Texas Rangers and won the series. In 1915, 1983, 1993, and 2009, the Phillies lost Game 3 and lost the series.

So what we’re trying to say is winning Game 3 is kind of big deal. And even though Philadelphia is home for Game 3, oddsmakers are setting Houston as the -125 road favorites. The 2019 Astros are the only visiting team to win Game 3 of the World Series since 2017.
At moneyline odds of -134, a bet on the Astros would have an implied probability of victory of 57.26% in the MLB betting line. A successful $10 wager on Houston would create a payout of $17.50.

First pitch at Citizens Bank Park goes at 8:03 pm ET on Tuesday, November 1. The Astros are given -175 odds to go on to take the World Series in the MLB playoff bracket.
Houston’s Yordan Alvarez is the favorite to win the World Series MVP Award at a betting line of +800. A 4-3 Astros victory is set as the most probable series outcome at odds of +300.
Philadelphia vs Houston Probable Pitchers
In the MLB lineups, Phillies right-hander Noah Syndergaard is showing a better won-lost record (5-2) with the Phillies since arriving in a midseason deal from the Los Angeles Angels, where he was 5-8. However, his ERA is higher with the Phillies (4.12) than the Angels (3.83).
Syndergaard will be making his fourth appearance and second start of the 2022 MLB Postseason. He was handed the ball for Game 4 of the NLDS against the Braves. Syndergaard went just three innings, allowing one hit and one earned run in Philadelphia’s 8-3 victory.
"Seven years just seems like a long time ago. I was just a very naive rookie at the time."

He’ll also be making his second World Series start. Syndergaard went to the bump for Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. Working six innings and allowing three earned runs, he got the win for the New York Mets in a 9-3 verdict over the Kansas City Royals.
Syndergaard has made two starts against the Astros. He’s 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA.
Syndergaard vs McCullers Stats
10-10 | Record | 4-2 |
3.94 | ERA | 2.27 |
4.43 | xERA | 3.57 |
1.26 | WHIP | 1.24 |
3.44 | SO/W Ratio | 2.27 |
Astros right-hander Lance McCullers will be making his third start of the 2022 MLB postseason. He toed the rubber in both the ALDS and ALCS-clinching games for Houston. As well, McCullers got the starting nod in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series when the club won their only title so far.
McCullers is 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 18 career MLB Postseason games for Houston, including 11 starts. Only Justin Verlander (17) shows more postseason starts in franchise history. This will be the third World Series start for McCullers.

A flexor tendon strain was limiting him to eight starts this season. Including the playoffs, McCullers has gone at least five innings in each of his 10 starts.
He’s 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in one career start facing the Phillies.

Houston’s Aledmys Diaz is 2-for-6 (.333) facing Syndergaard, with a homer and two RBI. Chas McCormick, Christian Vazquez and Alex Bregman are all 1-for-2 (.500). Bregman and Vazquez each drove in a run.
Game 3 Phillies vs Astros Prediction
Houston is 3-0 straight up on the road in the MLB Postseason. Philadelphia is 5-0 SU at home in the MLB Postseason. In other words, something has to give in Game 3.
This is the point in the World Series where the pitching depth of the Astros should come to the fore. Syndergaard figures to get one turn through the Houston order and then it will be up to the Phillies bullpen.
McCullers has been money for the Astros in postseason play.
Pick: Houston Astros ML (-134)
