Wednesday afternoon brings some NL Central action at the Great American Ballpark as the Chicago Cubs (2-3, 1-1 road) and Cincinnati Red (3-2, 3-2 home) conclude a three-game divisional set. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:35 pm ET.

The Cubbies will hand the ball to Marcus Stroman, who dominated on Opening Day. Hunter Greene counters for Cincy, who also pitched in the season opener.

Chicago vs Cincinnati Starting Pitchers

Chicago wouldn’t want anyone else on the mound Wednesday. Stroman was absolutely lights out in his very first start of the campaign, tossing six scoreless against the Milwaukee Brewers while allowing just three hits. He also struck out eight.

The righty did a great job of pounding the strike zone and also keeping his defense busy. He’s had no shortage of success against the Reds in his career as well, compiling a 2.55 ERA in six starts. After such a fantastic outing to begin 2023, Stroman will be oozing with confidence in the finale.

Stroman vs Greene Stats

There is no question that Greene has absolutely electric stuff. But, he’s still struggling to put it all together at the big-league level. The 23-year-old was hit around in his first appearance of the season, surrendering three earned on five hits across 3.1 innings of work.

Greene’s command proved to be an issue, allowing three walks as well. Despite having a triple-digit fastball, the former first-overall pick needs to do a better job of getting ahead of hitters. After all, big leaguers are more than capable of hitting fastballs, even if they’re coming in at 100 MPH. Greene pitched against the Cubbies three times in 2022, posting a 4.80 ERA in three starts.

Cubs Bats Come Alive

Chicago ended a three-game losing skid in style on Tuesday with a huge 12-5 win over the Reds. The Cubs banged out 16 hits in total, with four different players collecting three knocks apiece. That included third basemen Patrick Wisdom, who is already raking early on after a solid 22′ campaign.

On the hill, Hayden Wesneski contributed 4.2 innings of three-run baseball before handing things over to the bullpen. Julian Merryweather ultimately closed things out with a clean ninth inning. Chicago will be looking to move to .500 with a victory on Wednesday.

Cincy Off to a Respectable Start

No one is expecting much of the Reds this year, but they’ve started the season 3-2. Cincy first took two out of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates before splitting the first two games of this Cubbies series.

Luis Cessa gave the Reds 5.1 innings of work in the second game and allowed just two earned runs before exiting. The bullpen completely collapsed though, with Buck Farmer and Reiver Sanmartin both failing to get out of their respective innings, surrendering six runs combined.
