Mets vs Nationals Probable Pitchers

Max Scherzer (2-2, 5.56) is scheduled to start for the Mets against rookie Jake Irvin (1-0, 0.84). Irvin will be pitching on five days of rest and Scherzer on 10 days.

Scherzer vs Irvin

Max Scherzer
VS
Jake Irvin
2-2 Record 1-0
5.56 ERA 0.84
5.19 xERA 4.39
1.41 WHIP 1.22
2.00 SO/W 1.14

Scherzer was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Reds in Cincinnati because of a stiff neck.

That came after Scherzer was rocked for six runs and eight hits in 3.1 innings in a loss to the Tigers on May 3 in the second game of a doubleheader in Detroit. He had three strikeouts and one walk.

Prior to that start, Scherzer served a 10-game suspension from Major League Baseball for violating the prohibition on foreign substances.

A former Nationals pitcher, Scherzer is 3-0 with a 4.02 ERA in six games (five starts) in his career against his old team.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner has only one quality start in five outings this season, though the Mets are 3-2 when he pitches. Scherzer is 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in four starts on the road and 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts during the day. He has +1200 NL Cy Young odds despite his rough start.

The Nationals have won each of Irvin’s first two major-league starts.

Irvin notched his first win Monday by pitching 6.1 shutout innings to beat the Giants in San Francisco. Irvin gave up four hits while striking out five and walking three.

Irvin had a no-decision in his lone start at Nationals Park when he allowed one run in 4.1 innings against the Chicago Cubs on May 3. Irvin will be making his first career start in a day game.

CJ Abrams .500
Jeimer Candelario .200
Keibert Ruiz .143
Dominic Smith .000

Nationals second baseman Luis Garcia is 3 for 5 with a home run off Scherzer in his career. Conversely, first baseman Dominic Smith is hitless in 16 at-bats with seven strikeouts.

Irvin has not faced any current Mets hitters.

Mets vs Nationals Betting Outlook

Joey Meneses’ RBI single for the Nationals in the first inning accounted for the lone run Saturday before play was suspended. Washington had four hits and the Mets had two.

The Mets beat the Nationals 3-2 on Friday night as Francisco Lindor hit a rare three-run single. The shortstop has +2000 NL MVP odds.

Teams are allowed to add a 27th player to the roster Sunday because of the suspended game. The Nationals will call up right-hander Joan Adon from Triple-A Syracuse.

Mets vs Nationals Prediction

Scherzer clearly isn’t right physically, and the Mets have struggled following a hot start to the season. Irvin has pitched well enough to warrant a longshot wager.
