New York vs Boston Probable Pitchers

Carrasco, like the rest of the Mets’ staff, is having a rough year. He’s 3-3 with a steep 5.35 ERA in 13 starts, striking out just 48 in 65.2 innings while walking 29. Not good. Finding consistency is a major problem for the right-hander.

Last time out, Carrasco allowed four earned runs to the White Sox in only 4.2 frames, ultimately settling for a no-decision. Prior to that however, Carrasco twirled possibly his best start of 2023, tossing eight scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks and giving up a mere three hits. He’s also pitched a mile better on the road this season, compiling a 3.86 ERA. However, Carrasco’s ERA is over seven lifetimes against the Red Sox.

Carrasco vs Pivetta Stats

Carlos Carrasco
VS
Nick Pivetta
3-3 Record 6-5
5.35 ERA 4.44
65.2 Innings Pitched 75
48 Strikeouts 94
29 Walks 32

Brennan Bernardino was the opener on Monday and probably serves in a similar role here but since he did pitch an inning Saturday, it will be a limited role. Alex Cora already said the plan is for Pivetta to pitch quite a few innings in relief Sunday. After losing his spot in the rotation, the Canadian has been brilliant out of the bullpen, posting an ERA under three.

He also set a Red Sox record on July 17th, throwing six relief innings against the Athletics and striking out a whopping 13 hitters. His stuff is playing a lot better as of late. Pivetta’a ERA sits at 4.44 for the season, racking up 94 K’s against 32 free passes in 75 innings.

Disappointing Year For The Mets

New York is a prime example of no matter how big your payroll is, it doesn’t matter if you can’t produce wins. Despite a boatload of talent up and down their roster, the Mets are 17.5 games out of first place in the NL East and have one of the worst MLB lineups around.

Even the Wild Card appears to be a long shot. Their best average is Tommy Pham at .272 and he’s probably going to be moved at the trade deadline. When it comes to the rotation, no one is really shining and although Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander have ERAs under four, this year can also be considered a disappointment for them, too. On a more positive note, Kodai Senga looks like a stud.

Red Sox Not Out of Playoff Picture Yet

Boston might sit at the bottom of the AL East, but their 51-47 record is respectable considering the ridiculous amount of injuries this ball club is dealing with. Tanner Houck, Chris Sale, Garrett Whitlock, Corey Kluber, and Reese McGuire are all on the shelf at the moment.

And while the Red Sox managed to end a three-game skid in the back half of Saturday’s doubleheader, they have a couple of very difficult series ahead of them, playing host to the Atlanta Braves and then hitting the road to face the San Francisco Giants.

Mets vs Red Sox Prediction

I cannot pick the Mets when Carrasco has such a poor track record against Boston. With that in mind, take the Red Sox moneyline.

Pick: Red Sox moneyline (-145)
