The NL West was supposed to be a battle between the Padres (19-19, 9-8 away) and Dodgers (23-15, 12-6 home). There’s still plenty of time for that to play out, but so far San Diego is not doing its part. The Padres have dropped four of five and rank last in the division in runs scored, despite having a loaded lineup.
They’ll look to turn things around as they start a three-game set against the rival Dodgers on Friday, but online sportsbooks are not bullish on their chances. They’ve pegged LA as home favorites in the MLB odds, as the Dodgers chase their ninth win in 11 games.

Los Angeles Dodgers | -135 | -1.5 (+140) | U 9 (-115) |
LA is currently a -135 moneyline favorite, in a contest with a total of 9. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 pm ET at Dodger Stadium, in Los Angeles, CA, with clear skies and 66 degree game-time temperatures on deck.

San Diego vs Los Angeles Probable Pitchers
Despite San Diego’s underwhelming start, they’re still a top-five contender in the World Series odds. LA has the second shortest price in that market, and are -200 favorites to win the NL West.
The Dodgers will send Dustin May to the mound on Friday, who’s wildly exceeded expectations so far as the team’s fourth starter. May leads all LA starters in WHIP, and ranks second to Clayton Kershaw in ERA. He’s yielded two runs or less in all but one of his seven starts, and just shut down this Padres team last Saturday.

May didn’t allow a run over 6 innings versus San Diego, scattering three hits while striking out six. The 25-year-old has coughed up just a single homer in 40+ innings, and is undefeated in three home starts.
Having pitched in LA for multiple seasons he has plenty of experience versus the San Diego batters in the MLB starting lineups, producing great success. May has limited Padre hitters to a .192 average over 99 at-bats, and a .364 slugging percentage.
Snell vs May Stats
1-5 | Record | 4-1 |
4.89 | ERA | 2.68 |
1.57 | WHIP | 0.94 |
.252 | OBA | .164 |
1.9 | SO/W Ratio | 1.9 |
San Diego meanwhile, will counter with Blake Snell. The former winner in the AL CY Young odds has largely been a disappointment since arriving in 2021 from Tampa Bay, and he’s on pace for the worst season of his career.
Snell currently boasts a 4.89 ERA, up a full run and a half from his career average. He’s allowed seven home runs in only 35 innings, and hasn’t exceeded 6 innings in any of his seven starts.
He did pitch fairly well last time out in this exact matchup, holding the Dodgers to two runs. His control was an issue as he allowed three walks and a home run, but he does have a decent track record versus LA. Snell has held current Dodgers to a .232/.338/.405 slash line over 168 at-bats, with 55 strikeouts.
Padres vs Dodgers Predictions
Given LA’s recent form, we should be cautious about expecting another strong outing from Snell. The Dodgers just put up 14 runs in their last two games versus the Brewers, outscoring Milwaukee by 11 en route to two victories.

LA has scored 10+ runs three times in the last week and a half alone, and enter play averaging six runs per contest over the last 14 days. We mentioned how loaded the Padres lineup is, but the Dodgers’ is pretty potent as well. LA ranks second in the NL in slugging and OPS, and boasts three of the top-10 NL MVP odds contenders (Mookie Betts, Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman).
The Padres bats on the other hand, rank bottom six in the National League in both slugging and OPS. That’s in spite of having a lineup anchored by Fernando Tatis Jr., a top-three NL MVP contender.
San Diego is batting an NL worst .231 for the season, and is averaging only 3.4 runs per game over its last seven outings.
Padres vs Dodgers 2023 H2H Results

---|---|---|---|
May 7 | Dodgers | Padres | LAD, 5-2 |
May 6 | Dodgers | Padres | LAD, 2-1 |
