The Padres are -235 favorites for their matchup with the Pirates on Wednesday April 14th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm at PNC Park. Fresh off the first no-hitter in Padres history, Joe Musgrove gets the start for the Padres against his former team. Tyler Anderson, who spent the first five seasons of his career in the National League West, will be on the mound for Pittsburgh.

Despite a loss on Tuesday, the Padres are comfortably favored to win Wednesday night’s game in the Padres vs Pirates odds. Blake Snell was pulled in the first inning of Tuesday’s game, giving up three earned runs for just two outs, which ended a four-game winning streak for The Friars.

The Padres are also likely without Wil Myers on Wednesday. The power-hitting outfielder aggravated a knee issue which had troubled him in Spring Training and left the game.

The extent of the injury is unclear at this stage, but Jorge Mateo or Jurickson Profar are expected to replace Myers in the line-up for the third game of this series.

Early Struggles for Anderson

Anderson was solid as a Giant last season, finishing with a 97 ERA+. The start to his Pirates career has been less encouraging with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. Anderson has been hit with the loss in his two starts so far this season, and recorded just eight swinging strikes on 78 pitches against the Cubs on April 8th.

Pittsburgh can take some positives from Anderson’s start to the season, though. His 4.3% walk rate is by far the best mark of his career. Unfortunately, he’s well-below average when it comes to expected batting average. The increased usage of his cutter has had mixed results, with hitters registering an xBA of .283 on the pitch.

Padres Career Stats vs Anderson

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Jake Cronenworth 5 0 0 0 3 .000
Trent Grisham 2 2 0 0 0 1.000
Eric Hosmer 14 5 1 3 1 .357
Manny Machado 11 3 0 1 2 .273
Wil Myers 16 3 0 0 5 .188
Tommy Pham 4 2 0 1 0 .500
Jurickson Profar 6 1 0 0 2 .167

Anderson enjoyed some success against San Diego last year. He went six innings and gave up just two earned runs in his final outing of the season, and threw 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen earlier in the season.

Masterful Musgrove

It had been a long wait for the first no-no in Padres history. Musgrove delivered the magical moment in just his second start with the club. The former Astro is yet to give up a run in 15 regular season innings for San Diego, and he’s recorded 18 strikeouts along the way without a walk.

Following three seasons with the Pirates, Musgrove faces his former team as a different pitcher. He’s throwing his four-seam fastball much less frequently, and has made the cutter a primary pitch after being thrown just 6.4% of the time last season. The combination of the slider, cutter and curveball, with an occasional fastball, has proved a nightmare for hitters so far.

Pirates Career Stats vs Musgrove

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Wilmer Difo 1 0 0 0 1 .000
Adam Frazier 3 1 0 0 0 .333
Erik Gonzalez 2 0 0 0 1 .000
Gregory Polanco 2 2 1 2 0 1.000

The Pirates offense is obviously full of confidence. They got to Snell early last night, and put up eight runs, their joint-highest tally of the season. Musgrove is on top of his game right now, though.

Musgrove Keeps Dominating

It’s hard to bet against a guy coming off a no-hitter. Musgrove was a breakout candidate this season, and those predictions look to be coming to fruition. He’s not the first pitcher to make a leap after leaving the Pirates.

Not having Myers against a lefty starter is clearly a blow. San Diego were active in the offseason to establish depth, though, and this offense still has plenty of firepower even if Myers joins Fernando Tatis Jr on the IL.

A strong start from Musgrove should get the Friars back to winning ways.
