One National Leage West team headed to the postseason plays a division rival going home when the playoffs start next week as the San Francisco Giants host the San Diego Padres at 4:05 p.m. ET at Oracle Park in the middle game of a season-ending three-game series.

The Giants have the best record in the major leagues going into the penultimate day of the season. The Padres were eliminated from postseason contention last weekend on the heels of an epic late-season collapse.

It should be a perfect day at Oracle Park with the high temperature forecast for 82 degrees with sunny skies and light wind.

Probable Pitchers

Joe Musgrove (11-9, 3.22) will start for the Padres and face Kevin Gausman (14-6, 2.87).

Musgrove has not factored in the decision in his last two starts, giving up eight runs in 10.2 innings. He faced the National League East champion Atlanta Braves last Sunday in San Diego and allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings while striking out nine and walking three.

In his last seven starts, Musgrove is 3-1 with a 3.56 ERA.

Half of Musgrove’s 30 starts have been quality ones and the Padres are 16-14 in those games. He is 5-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 road starts and 1-3 with a 3.99 ERA in eight starts in the daylight.

Musgrove had had a tough time against the Giants this season, going 1-2 with a 7.06 ERA in four starts.

In his career, the big right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.51 ERA in six starts versus the Giants and has a 2-2 record at Oracle Park with a 4.09 ERA.

Since winning five straight decisions, Gausman has gone 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in his past three starts. He had a no-decision against the Colorado Rockies in Denver last Sunday despite yielding only one run on three hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts and no walks.

The Giants have a 21-11 record in Gausman’s starts and 19 of the 32 have been of the quality variety. At home, he is 6-4 with a 3.63 ERA in 13 starts and he has an 8-3 mark in 15 starts during the day with a 2.36 ERA.

Gausman has faced the Padres five times this season and is 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA. His career mark against the Padres is also 2-1 with a 3.78 ERA in six games (five starts).

National League MVP candidate Brandon Crawford hits Musgrove well. The veteran Giants shortstop is 5 for 11 with two doubles, one triple and a home run.

Giants second baseman Tommy La Stella is 4 for 10 with a double and a triple off Musgrove. However, catcher Buster Posey is 0 for 7.
