It’s a 12:35 pm ET matinee affair to close out a three game set when the Rangers (30-18, 14-10 away) play the Pirates (25-23, 12-12 home) at PNC Park on Wednesday, May 24th. Broadcast coverage for this one will be provided by Bally Sports Network and AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh.

Having evened the series out with a 6-1 victory on Tuesday, the Rangers look to keep their roll going before venturing off to Baltimore. In the month on May, Texas has only lost one series, propelling them to an AL West best 30-18 record.

Below, we dissect the pitching matchup and also provide all the Rangers vs Pirates odds. We’ll also offer up our best bet and prediction for this affair.

Rangers vs Pirates Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Texas Rangers -120 -1.5 (+130) O 9 (-105)
Pittsburgh Pirates +100 +1.5 (-150) U 9 (-115)

As we detail below, the Rangers should have the pitching edge in this matchup, although neither probable starter for Wednesday afternoon’s game is expected to dominate.

Tuesday’s 6-1 win over Pittsburgh was the first time the Rangers hit the under in eight games. The Rangers are 7-1-1 to go over in their last nine and the total is set at nine runs in this one. No team provides a better return on investment in baseball than the Rangers when picking a team to surpass the run total.

Texas vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers

In his second go around with the Texas Rangers, lefty Martin Perez has really seemed to find his groove. He’s coming off the best season of his career, where he made his first all-star appearance and is off to a 5-1 start this campaign.

Where he has struggled so far in 2023 is in his starts away from home. He’s given up eight dingers on the road this season, but none at home. Basically every statistic is worse for Perez when you look at his home/road splits, including a 5.28 ERA as a visitor compared to a 1.93 mark at Globe Life Field.

Perez vs Oviedo Stats

Martin Perez
VS
Johan Oviedo
5-1 Record 3-3
4.01 ERA 4.69
1.52 WHIP 1.54
.303 OBA .262
2.7 SO/W Ratio 1.9

Looking to solidify himself as an everyday starter in the league, Johan Oviedo has had an up and down season for the Pirates so far, although the recent results are promising.

An imposing figure on the mound at 6’5, 245 pounds, the Cuban righty has allowed just a single earned run in each of his last two outings, bringing his ERA down almost a full run from 5.59 to 4.69.

While Oviedo has limited damage recently, he is still struggling with his control, issuing multiple free passes in all but two of his nine starts this season. Lacking the sort of stuff to whiff opponents on a regular basis, keeping the basepaths empty is imperative to the 25-year old’s success.

Rangers Getting Offense From Various Sources

Two huge signings from a year ago are expected to lead the Rangers offense, but so far it’s been Adolis Garcia and Josh Jung swinging the heavy sticks for the Rangers making them such a great bet to go over the betting total time and time again in the MLB odds.

With Corey Seager back from injury and Marcus Semien providing steady at-bats at the top of the order, opposing pitchers should be scared of what is one of the best MLB starting lineups.

Garcia leads the junior circuit in home runs with 14, while Jung has gone deep in both games this series and three straight. At +1350 in the rookie of the year odds, it’s probably a good time to put a wager on the third baseman to capture the award.

Rangers vs Pirates Predictions

While Pittsburgh is over .500 for the year, they actually have performed better on the road than at home, where they’ve lost three of their last four.

On the other hand, Texas is 8-3 as visitors in their last 11 contests. In addition, the Rangers love playing day games as evidenced by a 13-4 record in matinee affairs this year. Jump on the -120 moneyline odds while you can in what should be a comfortable Rangers win.

Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline (-120)
