Despite the Rays red-hot start, they’re still outside the top-six contenders in the World Series odds. They’ll hand the ball to Jeffrey Springs on Thursday, as the 30-year-old looks to maintain his incredible form.
Springs has won both of his starts in 2023, throwing 13.0 innings of scoreless ball. He’s allowed only three hits over that span, and just seven total baserunners. His 13.2 K/9 rate is probably not sustainable, but it’s worth mentioning he has reached double-figures in that category in each of the past three years.

Springs is fresh off blanking both A’s and Tigers, and will be looking to avenge some pretty poor numbers against Boston in the past. He was 0-2 versus the Red Sox in 2022, posting a 4.50 ERA, while surrendering three home runs.
Springs is likely to experience some negative regression over the next few starts, but what he’s doing this year is no fluke. He’s improved in each of the past three seasons, and posted a 2.46 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 25 starts in 2022.

Boston meanwhile, will counter with Corey Kluber who’s fresh off a solid outing after a disastrous season debut. Kluber allowed just a single run and three hits last time out against the Pirates, after getting tagged for six hits and five runs by the Orioles on Opening Day.
The former Ray, and one-time stable in the AL Cy Young odds, has minimal history versus Tampa Bay facing current Rays hitters just 11 times in his career.

Tampa Bay entered Wednesday’s action leading the Majors in runs against, as well as opponent batting average and WHIP. Their starters have a ridiculous 1.82 ERA and 80.2% strand rate, while the bullpen has been even more impressive. Rays relievers have a 89.4% strand rate and a 1.58 ERA.
Boston on the other hand, is in danger of getting swept for the second time in three series. They lost all three games to Pittsburgh at home last week, and at 5-7 boast the worst record in the AL East.
