The Boston Red Sox (81-64, 37-35 away) visit the Seattle Mariners (77-66, 41-31 home) on Monday for the first of a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST, with Eduardo Rodriguez taking on Logan Gilbert.

In four meetings this season, Boston and Seattle have won two games apiece. It’s also an extremely important series for both sides as they continue to battle it out for a Wild Card spot.

Probable Pitchers

After sitting out 2020 due to health concerns, Rodriguez has really struggled to find his previous brilliance from the 18′ and 19′ seasons. The lefty has gone 11-08 with a 5.15 ERA in 27 starts. E-Rod has been able to rack up the K’s though, striking out 159 in 136.1 innings while walking just 39 hitters. It simply comes down to opposing lineups just teeing him up.

In Rodriguez’s last start, the Rays torched the 28-year-old for six earned runs across 3.2 frames. In fact, he’s surrendered 14 runs in his last four starts. But, there was a decent outing on September 2nd, holding them scoreless through six innings. Rodriguez has already faced the Mariners this season, giving up three earned across seven innings of work. He also pitches slightly better on the road, compiling a 4.41 ERA in 16 starts.

Rodriguez vs Gilbert

11-8 Record 5-5
5.15 ERA 5.10
136.1 Innings Pitched 95.1
159 SO 106
39 BB 20

It hasn’t been an ideal rookie season for Gilbert, who has a 5.10 ERA and 5-5 record through 20 starts. Similar to Rodriguez, his strikeout numbers have been stellar and he’s also shown great command. Big league hitters are just feasting off his fastball, batting .265 against the pitch, which is his primary offering. However, Gilbert is coming off two respectable outings. He limited a potent Houston Astros offense to just two runs and six days before that, shut them down again, tossing five scoreless.

The Red Sox are brand new for the youngster, having never faced them before. That being said, the only hitter with history against Gilbert is Jose Iglesias, who was previously playing for the Los Angeles Angels before signing with Boston last week. Although his ERA is similar at home than on the road, there’s a good chance Gilbert builds off two solid outings and puts together another impressive showing on Monday.

The Red Sox have been sliding ever since the All-Star Break and things got even worst recently, with ace Chris Sale testing positive for COVID-19. As a result, he missed Sunday’s start and will be out of the rotation for about a week at the very least. The virus has been a huge deterrent in Boston’s playoff push, with a total of nine players testing positive since August 27th, including Xander Bogaerts and Nick Pivetta.

By no surprise, they’ve been struggling lately without some of their main guys. Alex Cora’s squad has dropped four of their last six after two extremely tough series with the Rays and White Sox. On a more positive note though, all three games against Chicago were decided by one run. Boston is currently tied with the Blue Jays for the top Wild Card berth.

The Mariners are still in the thick of things for a WC spot, but they did just lose two straight to an underwhelming Arizona Diamondbacks team. This series against the Red Sox is a clear opportunity to gain some ground in the playoff race. Seattle is currently 3.5 games back of Boston and Toronto. The M’s also play a lot better at home, which is a great sign heading into Monday. However, Seattle hits an MLB-worst .211 at T-Mobile Park.

Red Sox vs Mariners Prediction

Rodriguez has been extremely unreliable, while Gilbert has strung together a couple of quality starts. That being said, Seattle is going to pull out a victory in the series opener. But, both starters have ERA’s over five and although Gilbert will keep his team in the game, runs are going to be scored on Monday.

Pick: Seattle Mariners moneyline (+110), Over 8 Runs (-115)
