With their slugger back in tow, the Twins (11-7, 7-5 away) put up double digits on the scoreboard in a 10-4 victory over the Red Sox (9-10, 6-6 home) on Wednesday night. These squads are right back at it Thursday, April 20th for a matinee matchup at Fenway Park with the opening pitch scheduled for 1:35 pm ET.

After a stellar 10-4 start that pushed them to the top of the table in the odds to win the American League Central, the Twins suffered three straight defeats before snapping out of their funk against Boston. For the Red Sox, this will be the last of a seven game homestand, during which they’ve going 4-2 so far.

This game is available on NESN and Bally Sports Network. For the Twins vs Red Sox odds, read on below, as we also offer up our best bet and pick.

Twins vs Red Sox Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Minnesota Twins +102 -1.5 (+158) O 9 (-114)
Boston Red Sox -120 +1.5 (-192) U 9 (-106)

As the home side, the Red Sox are -120 moneyline favorites in a game that features a total of 9 runs. So far this season, Minnesota has been one of the most profitable teams to bet the under on, as they’ve only gone over the betting line in six of 18 games.

Players on both sides will likely be happy for the afternoon start because it will provide better weather conditions as the last couple of nights have been chilly at Fenway. Thursday afternoon forecasts are calling for perfect baseball temperatures of 55 degrees with no chance of rain and a mild breeze.

Minnesota vs Boston Starting Pitchers

After missing the entire 2022 season following Tommy John surgery, Kenta Maeda is back as a fixture in the Twins rotation this season. At age 35 and in the last season of an eight year deal, the Twins are hoping he can revert to the form that saw him go 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA during the 2020 Covid-19 shortened campaign.

He was excellent in his first start, going five and punching out nine batters while allowing only one earned run, but allowed four runs in six innings in his last outing. Maeda’s had pinpoint control so far this year, not allowing a single walk over 11 innings, limiting damage from opposing squads.

Maeda vs Houck Stats

Kenta Maeda
VS
Tanner Houck
0-2 Record 2-0
4.09 ERA 4.50
1.00 WHIP 1.36
11 IP 14
9.8 SO/9 9.6

For Boston, Tanner Houck gets the ball. Now 27 years of age, the Red Sox hope to use the big righthander more as a starter this season, after being used mostly out of the bullpen last year. The Red Sox are 3-0 on the moneyline in the MLB odds in his starts this season.

It appears he will need to build up some arm strength as he’s failed to pitch past the fifth inning in three starts this campaign. There still seems to be some debate as to whether Houck would be best served being used as a reliever or in the rotation.

Standing 6’5 and weighing 230 pounds, he has the ideal pitchers body, but has been plagued by inconsistency in his starts. This is his fourth season with the big club, so one way or another, his performance this year should determine the best spot for him going forward.

Gallo Back With a Bang for Twins

As mentioned earlier, Minnesota has hit the under much more often than the over this season, and one of the reasons for that has been one of the worst MLB starting lineups on offense that ranks fourth from the bottom in the American League.

However, they just got a significant boost with the return of Joey Gallo. Fresh off a stint on the injured list, Gallo smashed his team-leading fourth homer of the season Wednesday night, a three run shot that put the Twins up 7-0.

While four bombs might be nothing to brag about at this point, he’s managed to club that amount in just 23 at-bats. For context, Pete Alonso and Patrick Wisdom are tied for the MLB lead with eight home runs apiece, but they both have over 60 at-bats.

If there’s one player that’s been carrying the load for the Twins this season, it’s Gallo who signed a one-year, $11 million dollar contract with Minnesota in the off-season and seems out to prove he’s far from done.

Twins vs Red Sox Prediction

Other than owning home field advantage in this contest, it’s a bit puzzling why the Red Sox are the chalk in this one. Houck has been very inconsistent as a starter in his career and has shown he really can’t stretch ballgames out for his bullpen.

Our prediction is to go with the Twins and the veteran on the hill in Maeda. Minnesota has proved streaky this season and has never had just one victory without following up with at least one more. After breaking their losing streak Wednesday night, it’s time for that trend to continue.

Pick: Minnesota Twins Moneyline (+102)
