McGregor vs Silva talk is lighting social media on fire. Conor McGregor versus Anderson Silva is a fight that has been discussed by the two on and off over the years but has picked up some recent steam lately online. The Irishman has been quite active on Twitter in the last few weeks. Normally McGregor’s social media matchmaking is rooted in some level of bad blood with his prospective opponent. This scenario with Silva seemed to come from a diametrically opposed place with Conor showing Anderson a ton of respect.

McGregor tweeted out a thread of MMA’s contenders for GOAT status. Atop the list, The Notorious put Anderson Silva and ever the humble pugilist, McGregor positioned himself in the number two spot. This gesture seemingly caught the eye of The Spider but he opted to go to a different social media platform for a retort.

On his personal Instagram page, Anderson Silva laid out the following challenge, translated from Portuguese, “I have an immense admiration for the great athlete Conor and I believe that a super-fight would be something historic for the sport,” Silva wrote. “Neither of us need to prove anything to anyone; I believe UFC and sports fans would like to see this great martial show, testing my martial skills with him would be fantastic!!”
McGregor retweeted and responded with a succinct “I accept”. The two have exchanged some verbal volleys over the years. Names like Gaethje and Diaz were mentioned as possible next opponents but Silva is a wildcard choice. Perhaps this is a deflection tactic used in prizefighting. Aiming to regain some level of surprise factor when a hotly discussed fight ends up happening (McGregor vs Diaz III). That’s not to say this McGregor vs Silva tilt never happens but I think the promotion pulls the trigger on the Diaz trilogy right now. Although there have been some rumblings of a BMF title rematch between Diaz and Masvidal. But still, I ultimately think the Diaz vs McGregor trilogy goes down next.

The Notorious vs The Spider

Silva’s prior bid for a McGregor bout was at 185 but Silva is looking to oblige McGregor a bit. Silva mapped out a very specific weight of 176.37 lbs for this contest. A bit closer to the welterweight mark of 170 which McGregor has had a few fights at. McGregor does not seem interested in this and does in fact want to make the full move up to middleweight. The 185 lb limit would mark the fourth division Conor McGregor has competed in for the UFC. A legacy move that would certainly appeal to the Irishman.

I would wait for this bout to be confirmed before betting on it. Stylistically this would be a curious fight. Both are generally more oriented to counter striking. So McGregor vs Silva could turn into an Adesanya versus Romero type of outing. A fight where both are respectful of the other’s power and looking to bait the other into a trap they’re laying whereby the fight becomes this inert thing.

Silva is 1-6 with 1 no-contest across his last eight fights and even that lone win was a polarizing one for many. That being said, I still think the size is too much for McGregor to overcome if this fight were to go down. Entertaining the hypothetical that this occurs, I would go with Anderson Silva.

 Pick: Anderson Silva (-125)
