Odds Say Nunes and Cyborg Won’t Fight in 2019; Nunes Considered Favorite in Potential Fight

At UFC 232 back in December, the promotion put on arguably the biggest fight in women’s MMA history. There, featherweight champion Cris Cyborg was looking to defend her title against bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, who was looking to become a double-champ.

Nunes ended up knocking out Cyborg in under a minute to cement herself as the greatest female fighter of all-time. Since then, Cyborg has been calling for a rematch, but sportsbooks are not expecting that to happen in 2019.

I truly believe Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes would fight each other again, but what makes this a tough question is if Cyborg doesn’t re-sign. At UFC 240, the former champion is taking on Felicia Spencer where many expect the Brazilian to win, but it is also her final fight on her UFC contract.

“Nunes wants the rematch with Cyborg next,” White said after UFC 239 to ESPN. “We’ll see if Cyborg is up for that, and if she wants to do that. And if not, there will be somebody else, there’s always somebody else.”

I do think there is a ton of value on yes at plus money, especially if Cyborg wins at UFC 240. Then, she will have the win to warrant a rematch and therefore it should happen.

There is no question this fight would go down much differently than the first one, but that doesn’t mean the result will change. I think Cyborg will not rush in and make it a brawl again as she now knows how much power Nunes has at 145-pounds. While for Nunes, I don’t think she will want to do that either as it was a dangerous strategy as Cyborg easily could have caught her and knocked her out.

While I think the fight will be more technical I do think Nunes will win again. She has tremendous power, and amazing footwork, and has a very underrated ground game. But, as the odds suggest, it will be a close fight and all it takes is one shot from Cris Cyborg to end it in a hurry.
