The UFC heads to Uruguay on Aug. 10 for the first time and the flyweight title is on the line. In the main event, champion, Valentina Shevchenko takes on Liz Carmouche in a rematch of their 2010 fight. The co-main event sees Vicente Luque take on Mike Perry in what promises to be fireworks. The main card airs live at 8pm ET on ESPN+.

Different Paths Since they First Met
Shevchenko (17-3) has only lost twice since her bout against Carmouche in 2010. She has been a force at flyweight being undefeated and defended her title earlier this year when she knocked out Jessica Eye. Before that, she won the title at UFC 231 when she beat Joanna Jedrzejczyk by decision. The 31-year-old has notable wins over the likes of Holly Holm, Julianna Pena, and Sarah Kaufman.

Carmouche (13-6) is riding a two-fight winning streak with wins over Jennifer Maia and Lucie Pudilova. Since she made the move to flyweight, she is 2-1 and has notable wins over Shevchenko, Jessica Andrade, the strawweight champion, and Katlyn Chookagian.

The odds have Shevchenko as a big favorite for a reason. Many, including myself, believe she will be a champion for a long time as she has all the skills necessary. Think of Demetrious Johnson’s UFC reign, as however he wanted to win, he did. Against Eye, she knocked her out and kept it standing, while against Joanna, she got the fight to the ground and did a lot of clinch work to seal the win.

However, something going for Carmouche in this fight is that she has experience fighting in titles and she told me the nerves will not be a factor. Add in the fact that she has a win over Shevchenko, and she thinks that will be in the back of the champions head for this one. Regardless, for the challenger to have a shot, she really needs to use her jab effectively and piece up Shevchenko. Then, when the time is right, shoot for a takedown and or clinch her up and show that she is the stronger one. Really, Carmouche needs to make this a ‘dirty’ fight to win.
All in all, I believe Carmouche can do that for a bit, but I think Shevchenko will win by decision in a closer fight than many suggest.
Pick: Valentina Shevchenko (-1100)
Vicente Luque vs Mike Perry Odds
Fighter | Odds |
---|---|
Vicente Luque | -225 |
Mike Perry | +175 |
Luque Looking for Six in a Row
Luque (16-6-1) is currently on a five-fight winning streak and is one of the top welterweight prospects out there. The 27-year-old has beaten Niko Price, Chad Laprise, Jalin Turner, Bryan Barberena, and Derrick Krantz during this winning streak and still does not get a ranked opponent. He also has notable wins over the likes of Thiago Santos, who just fought Jon Jones and Belal Muhammad.

Perry (13-4) is coming off of a decision win over Alex Oliveira in a fight where he continues to get top names even though he doesn’t deserve them. He is 2-3 in his last five with the win over Oliveira and Paul Felder who broke his arm early in the fight, and losses to Donald Cerrone, Max Griffin, and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

This is an easy one to call and I am surprised the odds are not higher. Vicente Luque will win this fight easily, as history has shown, Mike Perry can not beat the top guys despite fighting them almost every fight.

Luque is very good and one of the best welterweights on the roster, Perry is not. Although he is a fan favorite, there has been nothing about Perry’s game that makes me think he can beat top-15 welterweights so I expect Luque top win this one rather easily and possibly even knock out Perry.
Pick: Vicente Luque (-205)
