Will Font Get the Biggest Win of His Career?

Rob Font is on a three-fight winning streak and coming off a first-round TKO over Marlon Moraes that solidified his claim as a legit bantamweight contender. Cody Garbrandt, meanwhile, returned to the win column last time out after three straight KO’s including, losing his belt to TJ Dillashaw.

Font & Garabrandt Recent Fights

Font
VS
Garbrandt
Marlon Moraes, win by TKO Fight 1 Raphael Assuncao, win by KO
Ricky Simon, win by decision Fight 2 Pedro Munhoz, loss by KO
Sergio Pettis, win by decision Fight 3 TJ Dillashaw, loss by KO (title fight)
Raphael Assuncao, loss by decision Fight 4 TJ Dillashaw, loss by KO (title fight)

Font has had a big step up in competition recently with Assuncao, John Lineker, and Munhoz and lost all three by decision. However, his coach explained that after the loss to Assuncao, Font’s mindset has changed, and it has shown as he has looked like a different fighter in his last three outings. Garbrandt, meanwhile, has a ton of power, but his chin is also a concern as he gets rocked quite often.

This was the fight to make though, especially after Garbrandt decided against going to flyweight as the winner could put themself in line to fight for the belt.

Font & Garbrandt Stats

Font
VS
Garbrandt
33 Age 29
5’8″ Height 5’8″
71.5″ Reach 65.5″
6 UFC finishes 5

This is a phenomenal matchup between two of the best boxers at bantamweight, but both men also have underrated ground games, so don’t be surprised if at some point one of them shoots on the other one.

However, I do expect this to be more of a kickboxing fight and I think Font in the first round or two will try, and just stick his jab out and not like Garbrandt get inside. Once that happens, we have seen the former champ get frustrated and rush into something and get into a brawl which gets him knocked out. Font has legit power, and I think in the third round will catch Garbrandt and get the KO win.

Pick: Rob Font (-121)

Who Becomes the Next Title Challenger at Strawweight?

Xioanan Yan has been on a tremendous run in the UFC. Esparza, meanwhile, since losing two in a row to Claudia Gadelha and Tatiana Suarez, has looked like a new fighter and has mixed in her striking and wrestling well.

Yan & Esparza Recent Fights

Yan
VS
Esparza
Claudia Gadelha, win by decision Fight 1 Marina Rodriguez, win by split decision
Karolina Kowalkiewicz, win by decision Fight 2 Michelle Waterson, win by split decision
Angela Hill, win by decision Fight 3 Alexa Grasso, win by majority decision
Syuri Kondo, win by decision Fight 4 Virna Jandiroba, win by decision

Although Esparza is on a four-fight winning streak, her last three fights have all been close and could’ve gone either way. Against Yan, meanwhile, the fight really comes down to how good is her takedown defense.

Ultimately, I expect Yan to be able to keep the fight standing and be able to use her jab and kicks to piece up Esparza and win a clear-cut decision. Yan seems like the real deal and this will be her coming out party to a lot of UFC fans.

Pick: Xiaonan Yan (-134)

Other UFC Vegas 27 Picks:

  1. Justin Tafa (-200): Tafa should be able to find the chin of Vanderaa early and get the KO win.
  2. Felicia Spencer (-167): Spencer will be able to take this fight to the mat and control it and either get a submission or ground and pound TKO win.
  3. David Dvorak (-159): Dvorak is the much better striker and should be able to piece up Paiva over three rounds to win a clear decision.
  4. Edmen Shahbazyan (+135): Many are off the Shahbazyan hype train after one loss, but I still believe he’s an elite talent and will remind everyone in a big way as he’ll catch Hermansson early and get the first-round TKO.
